woman assaulted at the 300 block of T St NW early this morning, Monday, 09-30-2013

See this Monday, 09-30-2013 message from a Bloomingdale resident:

Bloomingdale Community, I'd like to share that I was assaulted while I was walking to the Howard University Metro stop early this morning on T Street, NW, between 3rd and 4th Streets NW.  At approximately 5:50 a.m., a jogger passed me, surprising and startling me.  I slightly jumped but felt calm when I realized he was only a jogger.  He jogged passed me, stopped at the corner, and began stretching.  As I passed him, I slightly glanced at him in acknowledgement as I passed him.  Shortly after I passed him, he approached me from behind and reached under my dress into my underwear. I was so startled and screamed very loudly so the man ran away.  I was immediately heard and assisted by another passerby and neighbor (who came out of his home), both of whom attempted to find the assailant.  They were unable to find him.  The passerby was about 1/2 block behind me and had witnessed the assailant walking behind me. The passerby seems convinced that the assailant had followed me for two blocks (and the passerby actually quickened his own pace to catch up with me in case I needed help because he felt something wasn't right).

I believe the assailant to be a Hispanic male in his late 30's.  He was approximately 5'8"/5'9", medium/athletic build (160 lbs or so), fair-skinned, very short (but not cropped) black hair, and square face.  He was wearing a white tee shirt and light gray jogging pants.  This description was also confirmed by the passerby.

I have reported it to DC Police and the two police officers and two detectives who arrived on the scene have been extremely responsive and helpful.  They have opened an active investigation and are regarding this violation as a 'sexual assault'.  I am very thankful to them, as well as the passerby and neighbor who immediately helped me.

I share this with all of you so that are aware.  While it wasn't dawn yet, I was walking on well-lit T Street and the assault happened on a well-lit corner with a traffic signal.  I wasn't wearing headphones and generally feel relatively aware of my surroundings.  However, I am a petite and small-framed woman in my 30s and I know that I am lucky that I did not experience serious bodily harm. I have own my condo in Bloomingdale and have peacefully and safely lived here for the past two years but this incident has made me feel very nervous. Please be careful out there no matter what time of day and please always be aware of those around you.

Popville: new Red Hen/DC Brau collaboration beer coming Tuesday, 10-01-2013

From our pals at Popville:

New Red Hen/DC Brau Collaboration Beer Coming Tomorrow

1st and Seaton Pl, NW

From an email:

“I wanted to send over the details of Sebastian Zutant’s second collaboration beer with DC Brau that’s launching Tuesday, October 1st. Sebastian is the co-owner/beverage director at The Red Hen.
This one is called the Dorcia and they’re brewing it by aging the Penn Quarter Porter on the lees of RdV’s Rendezvous blend in a Bordeaux barrel from Linden. It’s then removed and filtered. The result is a red wine driven, robust porter with a strong chocolate finish. It’s smoky, complex and great for fall.

They’ve made eight kegs and will be serving it for $9 a pint.”

Whatever motivates you to lace up your running shoes, please join us for an extended vinyasa/slow-flow practice geared specifically towards runners. Some yoga experience is helpful but not required. Saturday, Oct. 5th or Sunday, Oct. 20 at Bloomingdale.

Float, Jump,
Invert, Breathe

As the seasons change, we can all use a little lesson in breath, movement and transition. Join Marie Belle on Sunday, Oct. 6th, for the Transitioning with Ease workshop where you will learn techniques that will engage the core principles of floating and flying that are practiced in Ashtanga Yoga and Rocket Yoga. This class is designed to uplift your vitality to help you transition between poses with ease for a life-enhancing practice that will help you carry your newfound grace into all of life's transitions.

Grow Your Teaching Practice With Us

In 200-hour yoga teacher trainings, some people find all the new material they learn overwhelming. Our affordable 500-hour training helps teachers continue to integrate this material so they can express and embody the deeper teachings of yoga more effectively. The 500-hour training is designed for teachers who have attended a 200 hour training and is led by some of your favorite Yoga District teachers -- Marie Belle, Kat, Bernie, Jasmine, Aqeel, Hannah, Kelly, Julia and Mike Graglia. Offered from November 2 -December 15, this training shares new ways to apply your teaching skills for a more advanced yoga teaching career. You'll finish the program as a more multifaceted teacher, more prepared to serve a wide variety of students.

Learn Levity:
Laughter Yoga
Laugh-A-Yoga is coming to Yoga District on 14th St. on Oct. 5. Sound silly? That's because it is. This DC Laughter Yoga Workshop is a benefit for our friends at Yoga Activist, and it's seriously fun. Equal Access
to Yoga
What drives you to go to yoga? Is it for health, empowerment or balance? While many of us can get on the mat at a studio, there are some in our community who are in true need of the healing power of yoga, but are not as lucky to have access to yoga teachers. That's where Yoga Activist comes in. They support yoga outreach to underserved communities. And they could use your help.

Fresh from the
Farm

Thanks for your love.

The Ward 5 Report:
Office of Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie
September 27, 2013

Dear Citizen,

As many of you know, we may face yet again another federal government shutdown here in the District of Columbia. I fully support, and will participate in, keeping the District of Columbia government open on October 1. I stand with the Mayor, the Chairman, and my colleagues on the Council, and hope this demonstration of autonomy will send a clear message that the 633,000 residents of the District of Columbia will no longer suffer the consequences of political standoffs in Congress.

In Service,

Legislative Updates:

Committee on Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs marks up several bills introduced by Councilmember McDuffie

On Monday, September 23, the Committee on Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs approved three of Councilmember McDuffie’s bills. These bills will likely come before the full Council in October or November.

  • District of Columbia Distillery Pub Licensure Act of 2013 (B20-029) - The bill creates a distillery pub permit that provides similar privileges to distilleries as those afforded to “brew pubs” and “wine pubs.” Licensees would be able to offer on-site consumption of spirits, resale to other licensees, or sale to patrons for off-site consumption.
  • Manufacturers’ Sunday Sale Amendment Act of 2013 (B20-197) – The bill allows breweries and wineries to sell and deliver alcoholic beverages between 7am and midnight, seven days per week. The current laws do not allow manufacturers to sell their products on Sundays, which significantly hampers this growing industry.
  • Manufacturer Tasting Permit Amendment of 2013 (B20-234) – The bill authorizes licensed manufacturers to offer tastings of spirits and beers between 1:00 pm and 9:00 pm, seven days per week. Currently, tastings are only permitted Thursday through Saturday.

Committee Updates:

On October 3, 2013, Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie, Chairperson of the Committee on Government Operations, will convene a public hearing on B20-0169, the “Employee Suggestion Act of 2013.” This public hearing will be held in Room 123 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave, NW at 11:00 AM.

The Committee invites the public to testify or to submit written testimony, which will be made a part of the official record. Anyone wishing to testify at the hearing should contact Mr. Ronan Gulstone, Committee Director at (202) 724-8028, or via e-mail at rgulstone@dccouncil.us, and provide their name, address, telephone number, organizational affiliation and title (if any) by close of business Monday October, 1 2013. Representatives of organizations will be allowed a maximum of five (5) minutes for oral presentation and individuals will be allowed a maximum of three (3) minutes for oral presentation. Witnesses should bring 10 copies of their written testimony and if possible submit a copy of their testimony electronically to rgulstone@dccouncil.us.

If you are unable to testify at the hearing, written statements are encouraged and will be made a part of the official record. Copies of written statements should be submitted either to the Committee, or to Ms. Nyasha Smith, Secretary to the Council, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Suite 5, Washington, D.C. 20004. The record will close at the end of the business day on October 18, 2013.

Metro advises riders of upcoming major work on Red Line Service changes for weekend of October 4-6, 2013

Red Line riders will get a well-deserved break from rebuilding work this weekend, September 27 through 29, but major track work is coming over the weekend of October 4 through 6 that will affect several downtown stations.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, October 4, through system closing Sunday, October 6, free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between DuPont Circle and NoMa-Gallaudet stations to allow for major rebuilding work through the downtown area. The work includes replacement and renewal of third-rail components, installation of new rail fasteners, elimination of joints between sections of rail, and structural work.

As a result, Farragut North, Judiciary Square and Union Station will be closed. Gallery Place will remain open for Yellow and Green line service only; Metro Center will remain open for Blue and Orange line service only.

During the weekend of October 4-6, Red Line trains will operate as follows:

  • Between Shady Grove and DuPont Circle - Every 10 minutes between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., and at regular weekend intervals (every 15-20 minutes) at other times.
  • Between Glenmont and NoMa-Gallaudet - Every 10 minutes between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., and at regular weekend intervals (every 15-20 minutes) at other times.

Within the work zone, shuttle buses will operate on two routes:

  • Limited stop buses will travel between DuPont Circle and NoMa-Gallaudet stations with intermediate stops at Metro Center and Gallery Place only.
  • Local buses will travel between DuPont Circle and NoMa-Gallaudet making all intermediate stops (Farragut North, Metro Center, Gallery Place, Judiciary Square and Union Station).
Riders can minimize their travel time by considering these travel tips:

  • From the eastern side of the Red Line, use the Green Line between Fort Totten and downtown destinations.
  • Metrobus may be a good alternative for some riders, including those along Wisconsin Ave NW and Connecticut Ave NW. To check, use Metro's trip planner and select the "bus only" option.
  • Riders transferring between the Blue/Orange and Green/Yellow lines should use L'Enfant Plaza.

This Red Line project was first announced on June 18, 2013. Additional details regarding shuttle bus service and last train times will be posted on wmata.com on Monday, September 30.
