Wednesday 8/12/15 - 7:00PM - 8:30PM
(please arrive early, starts promptly)

About the Event:
Learn to Relax through the Yoga of Sleep - Yoga Nidra

We do not really sleep in Yoga Nidra, but through the process of doing it we learn a new way to deeply relax body and mind.  Yoga Nidra is practiced the entire time while laying on a yoga mat in savasansa - corpse pose. You might bring a blanket to keep you warm or for comfort (even to support your knees) and of course, wear comfortable clothing.

The instructor walks you through a relaxation process and meditation. Once you begin to master the relaxation that can be uncovered through Yoga Nidra, you might even feel incredibly refreshed as well as relaxed.

They say an hour of Yoga Nidra can be like 4 hours of sleep

In addition, this special yoga nidra experience includes further relaxation and meditation while listening to an alchemy crystal sound bowl.

Please plan for up to 1.5 hours for this event. To begin you will experience the process of Yoga Nidra.  The alchemy crystal bowl is then played to deepen the relaxation and enhance your overall experience. The total amount of time that the bowl will be played is determined in real time.

The tones produced by the crystal bowls, including the one for this event, are not just heard by the ear, one feels them in the body, with certain tones affecting the energy centers (chakras) for healing, balancing & meditation.

Should time permit, a question and answer period will be offered.

Curious?

Come try Yoga Nidra at Samsara House 2023. No yoga mat required, but you might what to bring your own blanket (none are provided) and of course, your own mat if you have one. Eye covers and eye pillows may also be brought to the session but are not required/necessary.

 Cost: $25 - $20
- $20 Earlybird Online Ticket (until midnight August 9th)
- $25 August 10th Until Day of the Event
- $25 At the Door - Cash Only
In addition, you are encouraged to have some cash on hand in case you feel inspired to offer an additional tip in gratitude for the experience.

 About the teacher
Deb's stressful days working on the Hill led her to discover yoga. As her practice grew to taking a class a day, she decided to learn more because of all that she was gaining mentally, physically, and spiritually. To expand her understanding she took teacher training, and has found her home in teaching yoga. She particularly enjoys introducing adults and kids to yoga in friendly, fun and safe way, helping students experience how yoga is for every body type and skill level.
Deb invites students of all levels to explore themselves and their boundaries in a safe, playful, and engaging manner in her classes, encouraging them along their journey. Her sense of humor shines through, bringing a sense of ease and community to the room. Deb's background in science and education allow her to share clear and easy to understand instructions and explanations on the poses and other aspects of yoga.
Yoga taught Deb how to relax (some) and to settle in to herself and the journey of life, and sharing that with students in her yoga classes brings her true joy.

Sunday at the Bloomingdale Farmers Market

yellow squash

Hi BFM Fans,

I never thought boiling summer squash could lead to a good end.... but I was wrong...

Not soup. I am talking about boiling squash instead of sauteeing it as a cooking technique for a finished dish that makes you sigh, that makes your dinner guests exclaim, that makes everyone at the table fight (politely) for the last spoonful in the bowl -- in other words, a dish as addictive as guacamole. In fact, I call it Provencal Guacamole. It was my discovery of summer 2013 and I have recreated it this summer because it was so good and there is a lot of squash here -- although all of it is green.

So cut up some small, very fresh summer squash into 1/2 inch rounds, throw them into boiling salted water until tender. Drain and mash them roughly with minced garlic and salt, freshly crushed pepper, shredded mint, lemon and olive oil. That's it. Very simple. But the choice of ingredients is crucial - You want very fresh summer squash that are not watery when they are cooked. Ask your producers. We don't get the yellow ones here in Provence, but they may work and that yellow would be pretty. Use a good garlic from the market and a very flavorful mint of your choice and a good olive oil. I have added parmesan and that was fun. Once I successfully substituted basil when I was out of mint. And chile heads can spice it up....but I like the original and Jeff cannot be a chile head this week...

COOKING DEMO:  In the heat of summer there’s nothing better to cool you down at dinner than a fresh chilled soup. Let Heather Johnson of In Good Thyme show you how to make two deliciously different seasonal chilled soups: green gazpacho with cucumbers, and a sweet cold peach soup. These are easy to make with nothing more than a sharp knife and a blender. #NoCook

Are You Gonna Eat That? Worm Salt at El Camino

The Dish: Worm salt
Where to Get It: El Camino; 108 Rhode Island Ave. NW; (202) 847-0419;elcaminodc.com
Price: $2 with any mezcal
What It Is: The worm salt—also known as sal de gusano—is served here with orange slices as a traditional Oaxacan accompaniment to mezcal. You dip the orange slices in the salt, take a sip of mezcal, then take a bite of salty orange slice. Beverage Director Paul Challan, who was born in Mexico, uses the Gran Mitla brand of worm salts, one of just a few available in the U.S. For the concoction, agave worms (technically a caterpillar called aegiale hesperiaris) are toasted and ground, then blended with sea salt and costeño chiles, a mild dried pepper that adds more depth than heat.

Friends of McMillan Park: "ANC 5E exaggerates level of support for McMillan Park project"

See this tweet from earlier today:

5:48 PM - 29 Jul 2015

Here is the text at the link in the tweet above:

According to documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 5E told the DC Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) that an “overwhelming majority” of residents living in the area surrounding historic landmark McMillan Park supported a commercial developer’s plans to turn the 25 acres of contiguous open green space into a mixed-use development featuring one million square feet of medical office space and about 150 townhouses.

The claim of community support was made by Commissioner Dianne Barnes, then Chair of ANC 5E, in official testimony submitted to the HPRB and presented in person at a hearing in November 2013.  FOIA documents reveal that shortly after the hearing, Tania Jackson, then principal of Create Communitas, an outreach consultancy firm working for the development project team, asked Commissioner Barnes how many letters she had received in support of the proposed project. Commissioner Barnes, according to the documents, said that she had received eight such letters of support. Create Communitas was paid almost $90,000 by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development to coordinate public outreach for the project.

A review of HPRB files indicates that the Board received written testimony from 25 individuals and organizations in support of the plan to develop the McMillan Park site. In contrast, at least 80 people and organizations registered their disapproval of the project plans with HPRB. The Board also received petitions signed by 610 people opposed to the project. ANC 5E did not explain the basis for its claim of “overwhelming” community support for the project.

The ANC’s overblown claims are another example of how the coordinated attempt to destroy McMillan Park has abused procedures intended to protect DC historic properties.

The documents on which this article is based were obtained by Kirby Vining after he brought suit under the District of Columbia Freedom of Information Act. The District Government delayed complying with the Act by over a year and earned a reprimand from Judge Stuart Nash, as reported here in a previous article. Mr. Vining was represented by Don Padou, a lawyer specializing in FOIA suits.

The article above is based on documents 002775 and 010558 available in the “Barnes FOIA Documents” folder at the following location:
