Subject: FST Community Update 10/31/2016

Greetings First Street Tunnel Community,
Thank you, everyone, who was able to attend the final Tunnel Forum Meeting. It is exciting to say that we remain on target to have all CSAs removed by the beginning of November. SKJD is contacting homeowners to schedule removal of the instrumentation and monitoring devices. The Uber service will end on October 31, as will 24/7 security at the Bryant Street APA. However, the FST Hotline will remain active until November 23. Since insurance claims for FST construction damage must be initiated through the Hotline, we will inform you of how to initiate a claim after November 23.
Updates at Construction Staging Areas (CSAs)
Channing Street CSA:
•    Demobilize trailers and materials, October and November 2016
•    Complete mining shaft cover and backfill, November 2016
•    Complete mechanical/electrical installations of Ventilation Control Vault adjacent to shaft, November 2016
•    Restore site and landscape, November 2016
•    Complete historical preservation work, November 2016
Adams Street CSA:
•    Completed water, storm, sewer utility restoration on Adams Street
•    Completed 80-foot-long (12-inch diameter) water pipe under Adams Street near the shaft on Flagler Place
•    Sidewalks are open
•    Complete Adams Street restoration, October 2016
•    Opened Adams Street and Flagler Place on Saturday, October 29
•    Complete planting of trees and shrubs, October 31
•    Permanent paving of Adams Street will be completed by the Small Diameter Water Main Replacement project, winter 2017
V Street CSA:
•    First Street is open
•    Completed installation of bulkhead gate
•    Completed V Street shaft internal structure/cover installation
•    V Street staging area to be cleared by November 1
•    V Street expected to open on November 1
Pumping Station CSA:
•    Thomas Street is open
•    Complete fencing and landscaping, October 31
•    DDOT will pave the west alley from Bryant Street to Thomas Street; date to be determined by DDOT
Landscaping
Landscaping began last week and will continue through early November. We are planting a variety of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants which include:

TREES
SHRUBS
HERBACEOUS
Overcup Oak
Pink Gumbo Azalea
Big Blue Lilyturf
Nuttal Oak
Dwarf Gardenia

Sweetbay Magnolia

Willow Oak

Accolade Elm

London Planetree

Ginko Princeton Sentry

Shaun McKim, DDOT Urban Forester, emphasized that people need to be made aware that these new plantings aren’t going to grow overnight. It takes time for plants to grow and thrive. In an earlier Tunnel Forum Meeting, John Kennedy talked about sleep, creep, and leap, as follows:
  • Sleep = transplant. The transition from the pot to the ground is about one year. The plant is both recovering its root and getting used to its new surroundings.
  • Creep = some growth. During year 2, there is some growth that occurs.
  • Leap = growth. Beginning with year 3 of growth, the plant grows at its normal annual rate.
We are encouraging neighbors to water plants during dry periods to increase the chance of growth.

Happy Thanksgiving DC.

As World Missions EXTENSION Center prepares for its November 19th Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway being held at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church located at 215 Rhode Island Ave. NW at 10:00am, (with the door opening at 9:00am) we need your help getting the word out to families needing food for their Thanksgiving dinner with their families.  On another note, as many of you know,  for close to 30 years, World Missions has faithfully  provided food baskets to thousands of families in need of food for their Thanksgiving dinner with their families.  Baskets will be given out on a first come, first to receive basis, and we want families coming to bring their children, neighbors, senior citizens, and other  families with them to the rally.    Attached is a copy of the flier please help us get the word out by  making copies of the flier and passing it on to people needing food for Thanksgiving.  Thanks so much, and God Bless you,

Dr. J. Perkins.

What's better than candy for the big H?

Hi BFM Fans,

Maybe you like Halloween candy for nostalgic reasons, but if you are looking for a delicious alternative, buy a crate of kid-sized
apples to give away.  I have been doing that for years and only one kid has every refused it or looked disappointed. And if you prefer cookies to candy, well walk right over to Whisked.

We have a great day planned.  Our favorite chef at market, Jonathan Bardzik will be here at 10 with a fabulous Fall menu:

  • Daikon, shungiku micro green, apple slaw with miso vinaigrette
  • Ground pork pumpkin Bolognese with pasta
  • Pumpkin curry with mushrooms
  • Cauliflower and kale with the BEST CHEESE SAUCE EVER
Queen Anne Langley Stem Honey will be on sale, straight from the rooftop hives that beekeeper Ted keeps. Proceeds go to support and grow the beekeeping at Langley.

BIKE HOUSE at 11-1 to get your bikes into shape for the cooler Fall rides.
PLUS 2 musical groups so we will have music from 10-1.

  • 10:00 SIMONE BARON: Simone is an accordionist who plays Brazilian and Jazz with a Bandolime player.
  • 11:30: SPECIAL CONCERT FROM DC YOUTH ORCHESTRA. The kids playing are Pablo and Mateo Ronderos, and Imani and Zahra Edwards. They will be busking to raise funds for their participation in the tour to Chile that DC YOUTH ORCHESTRA is planning for December. In Chile they will be playing alongside Chilean youth orchestras and at the Presidential Palace and several other venues, both in Santiago and the South.

What's at the stands?

MYCOLUMBIA MUSHROOMS IS BACK. James and Natalia have 5 different kinds of oyster mushrooms, their umami filled dried mushrooms and maybe some magic ground mushroom powder --

LITTLE WILD THINGS: Check out these pictures of what Mary and Chelsea have been growing for us this week!

KESWICK CREAMERY:  They have been posting some very cute pictures of their Jersey cows lately.

So what cheese goes well with Halloween?  A good melter like Vermeer for your roasted pumpkins?  A cheddar to go with the apples? A DragonsBreath to scare the goblins?

Reidapples

Reid has a huge variety of heirloom and popular apples

Reid's Orchard at Halloween is at peak Apple and peak cider and peak grape and they even have Kiwiberries.  (Remember to wait until they are wrinkly and squishy soft before you pop them in your mouth. ) Reid grows 75 different apple varieties throughout the season and you should taste all the samples but I do not know another orchard who offers so many interesting choices.  And if you want to make your own hard cider, start with their UV cider.
