Ahhh, now that the rain has cooled things down a bit, it's looking like the perfect Sunday to get out and about and visit some open houses. Here is the map of open houses in the area. If you're up for venturing a few more blocks over to the Logan Circle neighborhood, I am listing a brand new boutique condo building at 1502 10th St NW that is open for the first time this weekend from 2-5pm on Sunday. questions from a new resident about the Bloomingdale Civic Association (BCA)

See this message from a new-ish Bloomingdale resident:

When is the next BCA meeting? I haven't heard a word in months. The last organized meeting was in April, and the May meeting was cancelled last minute, possibly because of the disasterous outcome of the April meeting. Is the BCA still organizing these meetings, does the BCA even still exist?

This leads to a few other questions, I heard elections for the BCA haven't been head in quite sometime. Why is that? Shouldn't elections be held on some sort of annual basis?

It is appearant that the current BCA representatives lack organization and motivation to lead the community. In turn, I fear that residents of the community are:

1) Unaware of the existance of the BCA. Lack of effective communication to the neighborhood (e.g. poorly managed website/lack of posted information).

2) Unaware of funding availability - Missing out on district funds available to benefit the neighborhood for
community enhancement purposes. I believe it was in a February meeting, the "elected" Treasurer was unable to give clear communication on the status of funds available through community grants. When she was reminded of an approximate $ amount, she noted that they were going to expire soon anyway.
Shouldn't the community have access to this sort of information, or at the bare minimum, made aware of the availability of funds to better the community at large. I had no idea the BCA received district grants. Not to mention my BCA Memebership Payment that I paid by check has yet to be cashed 4-5 months later.

3) Unfairly represented - No elections = the community's inability to elect effective leadership that represents the neighborhood and involves all residents.

The BCA doesn't even have to hold "hot topic" conversations to warrant a gathering (i.e. liquor license discussions). It is also a good way to share positive community news, highlight community events, brainstorm initiatives to continue to improve the neighborhood, monitor community grant money, allow a forum for local businesses to meet the community, allow potential investors to meet and greet, allow the various community elected officials an opportunity to address the neighborhood at large, etc...

The purpose of these BCA meetings is for Knowledge Sharing!!! Maybe the BCA can develop a Mission
Statement so that the neighborhood clearly understands its purpose.

Bloomingdale connection to the Kagan Confirmation Hearings

Back in the 80's, a man named Lee Sandidge lived in one of the apartments located at 103 Seaton Pl NW. Mr. Sandidge worked in the laundromat that was below his apartment. In order to reach his workplace, which was directly under his apartment, he had to step outside. His attorney tells me that he felt so unsafe in the neighborhood at that time, he carried a pistol, which was frowned upon by law enforcement professionals.

Mr. Sandidge's case went all the way to the Supreme Court, although it was ultimately denied for review. Elena Kagan, current Supreme Court nominee, was then clerking to Judge Thurgood Marshall. Her comments on the case have recently surfaced during the confirmation hearings.

Mr. Sandidge's attorney is wondering if anybody remembers Mr. Sandidge or knows his current whereabouts? If so, please contact Elaine Mittleman at her name @ msn dot com.

Two weeks ago the fire department broke into my home because someone deliberately reported a fire on my property even though there wasn`t one. My guess is someone was trying to rob me and used that as a way to possibly gain access (ie. wait for fire department to break through the doors and then gain access when they leave- it happened at about 2:45pm in the afternoon on a weekday), but I was fortunate that my tenant was home and he called to let me know what was going on. Anyway- I now have two gouges in my brick next to my front door and I am wondering if anyone on the listserve might have a recommendation for a brick mason who could fix it?

If anyone on Randolph Place NW toward the 2nd Street NW end is willing to contribute the water and has a hose, I'll do the actual sweaty work of watering the new trees down that way (including the one across 2nd with the sign on it saying "Please water me."

Best for me is tonight (Thurs.) after 9:00 pm or sometime this weekend.

For that matter, if the logistics could be worked out, I'd help water trees in the neighborhood this weekend.

I'm in the alley between Randolph and R St NW, and there's a stray kitten who'se come around a few times. Can you find out if anyone knows it? Does anyone know anything about an older black male who might be a squatter, thief, or some such, around S Street NW? I and a neighbor have seen him a few times in the last few months going into the backyard of 120 S Street NW, which was overgrown with weeds and abandoned (or nearly so). We're unsure of whether he's gotten into the actual house. The yard at the house was finally tended to this past Friday -- two guys were sent by "the bank" is all one of the guys would tell me (Hispanic, little English ability) , and this past Sunday about 5:00 p.m. I saw the guy in question try the basement rear door then go up the back porch and try the first floor door, to no avail -- maybe the bank also made sure the doors were locked. Anyway, this guy might be about 50, with grey scruff around the chin/face, and every time I see him he's wearing shorts, sneakers, and a powder blue Wizards baseball cap. He sometimes has a 10-speed with him. I'm just a little skittish, as my wife will be staying home with our two babies beginning in a couple weeks and I don't need him coming to my back door trying to get in.

Also, does anyone know the status of 120 S? I traced ownership to a guy in South Carolina, but that Hispanic guy said "the bank" had sent them to do the yard.

bicycle stolen from rear of 88 V St NW basement apartment

Hello Neighbors,

One of our bikes was recently taken from behind the basement apartment at 88 V St. NW. It is a green Ross hybrid, and by the looks of the green/neon pink color scheme, it was probably manufactured sometime in the mid '90s. It has new tires (which do not match exactly) and a rack over the back wheel. The model name is "Minotaur". It probably doesn't have a high resale value, but it is invaluable to the young professional who needs it to ride to work in the morning, so any help finding it is much appreciated.

I wanted to put in a plug for our handyman, ANDY HENSLEY (301. 660. 0652). If anyone in the neighborhood is looking for a reliable person to do some carpentry or other handyman work around the house, I would highly recommend Andy.

He fixed our back fence and resealed a leaky shower for us along with a few other odds and ends around the house and did a great job. He was always on time, returned my phone calls within 24 hours, did a very professional job and cleaned up as if he had never been there. Andy is a great carpenter and is certainly up for bigger jobs - like building a fence or deck.

I live in the neighborhood and have a home build in the 1920`s that has no central airconditioner system. I am looking for recommendations on what types of systems are best and less obstructive to install in this older homes, based on other residents who have had to install a central air system.

What companies or individuals would you all recommend and give me also an idea of length of time to install one, costs, unit on the roof vs. backyard? The attic has not been insulated and has no venting system so the heat in the home is oppressing at times.

As many may be already aware, North Capitol Main Street (NCMS) has diligently been working over the past 8 months to improve the physical appearance and image of our commercial business district through an aea clean streets initiative.

On an ongoing basis every Tuesday thru Sturday, The Clean Team Sentinels, with manpower furnished by Ready Willing & Working (RWW), have been collecting debris and trash articles throughout the North Capitol and First Street NW corridors from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm daily. Additionally, the clean team is involved in other activities such as setting up tree boxes, light poll baskets and graffiti removal from commercial property sorefronts.

As a part of keeping the community apprised of the progress of the clean street initiative on a monthly basis, NCMS will report out to the cmmunity at large on the progress of the program by sending a monthly Operation Clean Sweep Trash Collection Report as well as other information relevant to the program. Also, we ecourage feedback from the community regarding any concerns relevant to the pogram itself.

It is the mission of NCMS to promote economic development and business retention activities within the geater North Capitol area which include the neighborhoods of Eckington, Bloomingdale and the Truxton Crcle area of Shaw.

Here are the stats for the Month of May:

· The NCMS team collected 1,528 bags – 22. 92 tons of rubbish collected.

· The team completed a weed and mulch project in the park located at North Capitol & Florida Ave. NW.

· The team of Landscapers installed 12 additional self watering planters in designated areas within NCMS Main Street boundary

· The RWW night watering crew has been watering with Miracle Grow on a daily basis.

13 S St NE: application to DYRS for a group home

I stumbled upon an application to Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) for a group home at 13 S St NE. The proposed home is just feet from the Emery House homeless shelter on Lincoln Road NE and only a few blocks from the new St Martin's Apartments housing project. Haven`t us Eckington residents done enough to house the city`s social services?

The woman at DYRS, Linda Harllee Harper, was extremely responsive and helpful. She replied back confirming an application had been submitted for 13 S St NE and said they encourage vendors to speak with the community & take neighbors concerns into account. I`m trying to learn what the youths of this proposed home have done to require rehabilitation (drug use? violent crimes?) and how many it would house.

I attempted to contact our ANC representative, Sylvia Pinkney, last week without any luck.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

neighbor assaulted at 2nd & R I Ave NW last night by teens

I just wanted to let you know so you can inform the neighbors about the group of kids (probably 15-16 years old) and two of them who attacked me today on the corner of RI Ave and 2nd Street NW at 6:30PM.

I was walking down the RI Ave NW from 1st toward 2nd Street when I passed one group of teenagers (African-Americans, 6-7 of them). I was waiting for the pedestrian’s light to cross the Second street when two boys from the group approached to me behind my back (what I couldn`t hear as I had my iPod on) and punched me in the face. I was able to protect myself (kick one of them) while I was calling the police. It seemed they didn`t want to stop until they realized I am calling 911. They ran away toward 1st and T Street (where the Bloomingdale liquor store is). Police were there in less than 2 mins, but there wasn`t anything much they could do. They wrote a report. The boys who attacked me are around 5ft8in tall, with very short hair.

I keep reading in the Bloomingdale newsletter, and I actually saw few times similar posts about group of kids chasing people on the street. It seems it is the same group. Just want to let neighbors know so they can be cautious.

lost dog from the unit block of S Street NW

Our dog Zoolander ``Zooey`` ran out the door after being spooked at the end of a walk from our house on the unit block of S Street NW Sunday night 6/13 around 9:30pm. He took off toward North Capitol Street and then headed north. We couldn`t catch up with him. We`ve searched everywhere up to the hospital on bikes including the alleys with no luck. We`ve had him only a month from the Washington Animal Rescue League and he`s still very skittish around new people and things and the city in general.

He`s white and tan (almost orangey) with a lot of short fluffy hair. He is six years old and about 40lbs. Zooey is on some serious daily medication which he needs to stay stable.

Cookie`s Corner re-opened today

Strolling by 2nd & Elm Street NW, I noticed a ``Now Open`` sign on the door. I stepped inside and noticed that the shelves in the public area were stocked with chips, salsa, wines (plus some groceries like toilet paper, dishwashing liquid, breakfast cereal and dog food.) There is also chilled beer, milk, assorted dairy items and ice cream. I assume that the alcohol license is for off-premise comsumption. It looks like there will be stool seating along the window facing 2nd Street NW and Parker Flats.

They weren't set up just yet to cook anything - that will begin tomorrow. A menu should be available tomorrow. Pizza and sandwiches will be prepared behind the interior window panes that separate the public space from the food prep area (and the cash register.)

And yes, the name is still Cookie`s Corner.

The hours of operation are 9 am to 10 pm seven days a week.

The undersigned residents of Bloomingdale request that Yong C. Choe and any other owners of 1821 1st Street, NW (Square 3110 Lot 0137 at the northeast corner of 1st Street and Seaton Place) Washington, DC 20001 use this property for some other business that the neighborhood needs rather than a dry cleaning business. Although we definitely appreciate the owners` efforts to rehabilitate a long-vacant building and put it back into useful service, we do not support the opening of a second dry cleaning establishment. This area needs a variety of services that we do not have currently and which we as neighbors wuld support heartily. These services include sit-down, full-service restaurants, boutiques, stationery and card stores, consignment shops, electronics stores, child-care centers, hardware stores, bakeries, deicatessens, diners, pet grooming establishment, vet clinic, bank, etc. These ae businesses that we want, that we need, and that we will ptronize. We are not likely to patronize another dry cleaning establishment.

Out of a concern for the owners and their investment and out of concern for the long-term well-being of Bloomingdale, we are coming to you now before the reconstruction of 1821 has gone too far. We want your business to succeed; we fear that your current concept will not, to your detriment and ours. Our elected rpresentatives are ready and willing to meet with you at any time.

``I`` was beaten up by 5 teens at North Capitol Street near the Liquor Store at 7pm, walking home alone from work, broad daylight. There were people around, nobody helped, and everybody pretended not to have seen his bag got stolen. He got away with just bruises.

``T`` was hit one time on the side of his head on North Capitol Street, also walking home from work, so probably also around 7pm, broad day light. We were in a group of 4, but two of us were ahead of him and his visiting niece.

``M1``, my boyfriend ``M2`` who`s visiting, and myself were mugged last Saturday night little after 1am at P & First NW. But they probably were following us from New York Av and First or something. They beat both M1 and M2, but M1 got the worst blow. They left me alone, until I started yelling at them to not do this to us and they decided to take my purse, one of the guys held me, they took my purse, and after that ran away. M2 my bf had already given off his wallet and cash. Might have been the same gang who attacked ``I`` -- approx 5 young guys who started by hitting hard from the back.

I would advise tenants to at least avoid North Capitol St. like the plague. In the early mornings it was always fine however. And just always take a cab home. It never crossed our mind last Saturday night, but yeah...

We have had a wonderful time here in DC, until the last few weeks... Summertime is the season for muggings is what we were told in the Howard University Hospital ER. They fix jaws all the times then, sadly!

I own a house on Bates Street NW. I have had wonderful European tenants who were working on the Hill on human rights issues. As of last night, (Saturday) three young men have been mugged and beaten by teens who then robbed them. These three muggings and robberies happened over the past two to three weeks. Police were called two of the three times. I think the other two assaults were in the south side closer to New York Avenue.

Michele, the Dutch student, is now in the hospital with his jaw broken in three places and missing teeth from a mugging last night at First and T Streets NW. He has a concussion. It was nighttime. The other two muggings were on North Capitol Street in broad daylight. They were due to depart for Europe tomorrow after what they described as a great experience in Washington. Instead, Michele has to undergo surgery on (Memorial Day). I am very sad about this.

Please warn others in the neighborhood of what is happening, so they can be more vigilant. Where are the police?

Couldn't help but notice the surge of development activity along 1st St. NW this week (just got back from a walk this a.m.)...

The new dry cleaners on the northeast corner of 1st and Seaton NW is nearly done -- getting a coat of paint even as I write. [moderator note: This address would be 1831 1st Street NW.]

I'm virtually certain I saw some construction types going in and out of Baraki-to-be early this week at 1st and T NW.

Today, I saw work beginning on the ugly old red shell adjacent to Baraki to the south [moderator note: I believe that this address is 1837 1st St NW, owned by a Bloomingdale resident].

And work has begun on the long-dormant, newly fenced red house on the northeast corner of 1st and Randolph NW.

On the night of Dec. 3, as a Pepco crew tried to restore power in the 1900 block of First Street NW, a resident of the area walked by and didn`t like the way one crew member made eye contact with him, according to evidence presented in court by prosecutors Friday.

The resident started a fight, but the worker subdued him, and the resident left, according to the government evidence presented in D.C. Superior Court.

In a statement, prosecutors said evidence showed that the following events then occurred:

The resident returned, with a .22 caliber pistol. He yelled about finding the worker he had fought. The worker had taken refuge inside a large Pepco truck at the behest of his colleagues. But the door to the truck was open.

A co-worker stepped in to close the door.

A shot was fired. The co-worker was hit in the back of his head.

On Friday, the U.S. attorney`s office said, Marlo Johnson,17, who was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault while armed in connection with the incident.
Sentencing was scheduled for August.

WE ARE ON THE MAP!!!!! Open invitation to neighbors to the dedication of DC's newest street: Bloomingdale Court -- Saturday, May 22, 2010.

This Saturday is a very big day for Bloomingdale. During the day, we have the Mt. Bethel Baptist Church Health & Fitness Fair and the Bloomingdale Neighborhood Yard Sale in Crispus Attucks Park. That evening we will see the very first community camping evening in Crispus Attucks Park (complete with police escort). Please enjoy all those events, and while you are out mingling with neighbors, buying stuff, or picking up sage advice about healthy cooking, please stop in to another major event.

At 11:30, the residents of DC's newest street and I will be dedicating the opening of Bloomingdale Court. After an almost three year effort, we have gone from conceiving the idea of naming the alley that has five residences in it to actually working a bill through the City Council, getting all the logistics through the web of multiple District agencies, and now dedicating the new street. So we have invited several council people (Chair Vince Gray has officially accepted), the Mayor (he may come but will definitely have representatives), DC government staff who were critical to helping our effort, and now you. Yes, you! No celebration like this would be complete without neighbors.

So again, please come out to Bloomingdale Court (the 100 blocks of U and V Streets NW and the 2000 blocks of 1st Street and Flagler Place) this Saturday about 11:30. We will have a bit of ceremony and some refreshments.

Please come and celebrate with us!

... Get ready for the second annual 1st on First- Art + Music Walk 2010!

It's that time of year again... the dog days of summer will be upon us before we know it. But there's a light at the end of that long, hot, muggy tunnel--North Capitol Main Street is once again partnering up with The Pink Line Project to bring you our second annual Art+Music Walk on Saturday, August 7. (First Saturday) And we need YOU to make this event complete!

North Capitol Main Street is now recruiting First Street residents between R and Rhode Island NW, and we're looking for 15-25 houses. If you're willing to "host" a sculpture in your front yard from late July through the month of August, we'll cover the cost of insurance and The Pink Line Project will select and install the sculptures. All you need to do is admire "your new" art as you walk by... and be prepared for a bit more attention than you're used to.

Have you just finished some great landscaping out front or a maybe new paint job or is your front yard already the envy of the block? This is your chance to show it off--along with the work of a local artist!

The planning committee for the big annual Community Yard Sale lost some key volunteers this year, and we're now seriously behind in our efforts to promote the event and sign up people who want to sell at this year's sale.

So we have 2 simple questions:

1) Are there volunteers out there who can help over the next 4 or 5 days (mainly delivering flyers), or on the day of the yard sale (Saturday May 22nd)?

2) Do you think you'd like to sell at this year's yard sale?

We in LeDroit Park and Bloomingdale are on our way to getting our very own heritage trail, but the LeDroit Park-Bloomingdale Heritage Trail Working Group needs your help.

The Working Group will meet Wednesday, May 12 at 7 pm at St. George’s Episcopal Church (Second & U Streets NW) to collect stories, old photos, and to plan how to interview our neighborhoods’ long-time residents.

All the material we collect will be used to plan the heritage trail that will lead through the neighborhood.

bathroom remodeling contractors

A big project that I have for the summer is remodeling the bathroom, so I am looking for references on bathroom remodeling contractors. Price isn't too much of a concern, the biggest concern is that they do a good job and left their clients feeling satisfied. We plan on having the toilet and sink replaced, floor tiles replaced as well as the lower portion of the wall tile replaced. Any recommendations on decent contractors, or even a decent place to buy tiles/fixtures would be appreciated.

North Capitol Main Street, Inc. (NCMS) announced today that it has been awarded a $20,000 grant from The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation. The Cafritz Foundation gift—the most significant grant from a private foundation in NCMS history—will help to sustain the organization’s economic revitalization agenda for the North Capitol corridor in 2010.

credit cards fraudulently used

From a 1st Street NW resident:

In the past week, the credit cards of both my housemate and I have been fraudulently used on opposite ends of the coast. Neither of us lost or misplaced our cards at anytime, so we`re pretty confident the card numbers were copied from some commercial establishment. It`s very possible that the cards were copied months ago, but if it occurred more recently chances are fairly high that it happened out of one of the neighborhood stores, in which case I`d suspect that others on this list have been or may be hit as well. Keep an eye out!

A/C for a basement

I would like to install some easy A/C in the basement unit of my house. The windows are too small for a window unit, so I think my options are either (a) a mobile (rolling) A/C unit, or (b) one of those rather flat, wall-mounted A/C units. We know that a number of residents in the area have been parking in the private driveway of the Firehouse located on North Capitol and Quincy Place NW.

We want to make all residents aware of the fact that we are and will be actively accessing the firehouse on a regular if not daily basis. This includes non-business hours, so please do not use the driveway as a parking lot. The driveway is posted and we will be forced to ticket and tow any unauthorized cars who park there with no notice. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
