Hi BFM Fans:
Summer is still lingering in the eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, summe squash, okra, cucumbers and corn but Fall is beckoning. Tonight I roasted a chicken between 2 cast iron pans in a very hot oven and served it with braised Dino kale, a mound of string beans and one of Garner's white Hayman sweet potatoes, a Maryland heirloom variety.
The ugly, stubby, cinnamony Hayman is from the Eastern Shore but it was called the crab Potato in Philadelphia because it was used to make croquettes and stews. It is very good with a crab boil.
Did you know that sweet potatoes are morning glories that put down roots? Although it is a tropical plant that demands a long growing season, it can be grown almost anywhere now. And speaking of local Tropicals...
Way Down Yonder in the local Pawpaw Patch lurks the wayward child of a mango and banana with a touch of pineapple. TIP: wait until they are soft and then cool them in the fridge for a few hours before you slice and scoop.

KESWICK: Have them style you a cheese platter. There is so much variety on the stand with both the Jersey cow milk and mixed milk cheeses--morbier, valancay, camembert style mixed milk cheeses plus the classic they have had for years. I love that they keep creating new cheeses for us. And you can sample every single one of them at the stand. Don't forget the yogurt, the quark (my childhood breakfast was a piece of toasted pumpernickel raisin smeared with quark)(Pano has the pumpernickel raisin), Mark's own pimento cheese (every Southern guy has to have Pimento Cheese), and ricotta. Ricotta is lovely with sliced poached pears and drizzled with the poaching syrup -- or honey.

TIP: The baby Ginger Melanie's Mother is growing in the high tunnel is fiberless, peel-les and without peer. Fragrant and very flavorful. . The turmeric is not the funny dry powder -- it is the lovely tuber itself. Duck Eggs too.
