Neighbor,

We celebrate Emancipation Day this year in the context of renewed calls for justice and racial equity that have gone unanswered for too long.

My bill, The Reparations Foundation Fund and Task Force Establishment Act, is a critical step in redressing the centuries of slavery, Jim Crow, and Government-sanctioned discrimination that have denied Black Americans wealth-building opportunities at every turn. We cannot fix longstanding racial inequities like the District’s racial wealth gap without reparations. As you celebrate Emancipation Day, I hope you will join us in calling for racial, economic, and social justice.

In service,

Legislative Update

Last week, Councilmember McDuffie unveiled his sweeping Clean Slate legislation after years of development and collaboration with stakeholders.

This bill simplifies and rectifies the District’s imbalanced criminal record sealing laws, which are some of the most complex in the country, by automatically sealing non-conviction records without requiring an individual to file a motion or prove their innocence.

Upon introduction, Councilmember McDuffie said, "At its core, this legislation is about equity and fairness. The current law creates additional hurdles for residents with publicly available criminal records, disproportionately Black Washingtonians, who often lack the resources and institutional knowledge to complete this cumbersome process. Automatically sealing records and expanding the number of eligible misdemeanors would help to chip away at the layers of institutional barriers that inhibit the successful transition home for thousands of District residents returning from periods of incarceration."
