How
many workers does it take to build a convention center hotel? Thousands, and
the developers of the Marriott Marquis will soon have places to house them. A
permit was issued Friday to install 17 office trailers on a paved lot at 929 L
St. NW, to house the Marquis construction staff — roughly 1,600 people working
feverishly on the hotel at 901 Massachusetts Ave. NW.
The
1,175-room Marquis, with more than 100,000 square feet of function space, is
expected to open on May 1, 2014. The project went above ground in August after
a 21-month mining operation.
As
for other building permits issued by the District on Nov. 9:
822 H St. NE: The existing storefront will be
replaced. Stan`s Inc., a discount clothing store, received an $85,000 grant
from the District as part of the H Street NE Retail Priority Area Project grant
program.
113
Rhode Island Ave. NW: The first floor of this Bloomingdale building will be
converted from barbershop (the former Showtime Hair Salon) to tavern. The
Showtime Lounge, a venture led by neighborhood resident Paul Vivari, will be a
coffee shop by day and community gathering spot, with alcohol and finger foods,
by night.
1025
Thomas Jefferson St. NW: The JBG Cos. was awarded a permit to renovate more
than 30,000 square feet on the third floor for a tenant.
2400
14th St. NW: UDR Inc. will install a Gunite swimming pool on the 9th floor of
its Capitol View on 14th apartment building on the U Street corridor. The
7,720-gallon pool will be 12 feet 6 inches wide by 29 feet 10 inches long and
only 3 feet deep throughout.
