FieldtoCity: Summer Produce, Fresh Chicken and Rain Barrel Installation
Today
we received some hefty cases of squash and zucchini, and we hope plenty of the
stuff will find its way onto your grill this weekend. Other local produce that
is abundant right includes arugula, strawberries, kale and broccoli. Our
produce comes from a 20 acre smallholder in Montrose County, Virginia and
arrives freshly picked on Wednesdays. As of last week, we started delivering
weekly produce boxes to Bloomingdale addresses on Wednesday evenings. (We
deliver either by bike or on foot) Also, fresh chickens from Polyface farm
comes in Thursday and will be available all weekend. For more details, please

FieldtoCity
has now been in business in Bloomingdale for over 5 years, and we are fortunate
to have avoided any issues with flooding thus far. One of the obvious ways that
we can all help to alleviate the problem of storm water overflow is the use of
rain barrels to capture run-off. Last Sunday, District Garden performed a
lightning-quick installation of a 55 gallon barrel which is visible to everyone
on our 2nd Street wall. The cost is only
$60 for all Bloomingdale residents [and all DC residents -- Ben from District Garden] as it is government supported, and the water
is great for gardening. Even if you do not intend to use the water, it can be
safely discharged after a storm has passed, taking the pressure off our
