Preserving the Quality of Live for Our Seniors

Last week, the Ward 5 Senior Advisory Council held its quarterly meeting at Providence Hospital’s Ross Auditorium. Attendees heard from the Department of Public Works’ (DPW) Director Bill Howland, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Model Cities, and AARP on issues that directly impact senior citizens. Additionally, the Department of Health was on-hand to provide information on its Rodent Control Program.

CM McDuffie with Ward 5 Seniors

The Senior Advisory Council was created by Councilmember McDuffie to inform his office of issues of particular concern to Ward 5 seniors, including their priorities for the Fiscal Year 2014 budget. Many Ward 5 seniors conveyed their concerns relating to the affordability of housing, adequate transportation and sustainable jobs. In response, the Councilmember expressed his support for a $5.8 million increase in the budget of the D.C. Office on Aging to meet the needs of the District’s seniors.

Working Together To Make Our Local Businesses Thrive
CM McDuffie at Ideal
Establishing an open dialogue with new and existing businesses in the Ward is a high priority to Councilmember McDuffie. This week, the Councilmember visited Ideal Electrical Supply Corporation, a Ward 5, small, minority-owned business that has served the community for more than 20 years. During the meeting, the Councilmember outlined his agenda and solicited input on how his office could better serve their needs.
D.C. Water Town Hall Meeting
Ward 5 Town Hall w/ DC Water
This week, Councilmember McDuffie co-hosted a town hall meeting with D.C. Water’s General Manager George Hawkins to discuss water projects and issues impacting the community. Speaking to a packed house at McKinley Technology High School, D.C. Water outlined its plans relating to infrastructure, the Clean Rivers Project and water rates. Community Meeting on the Harry Thomas Playground
The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Department of General Services (DGS) would like to provide the community with an update on the Harry Thomas playground and other exterior amenities, which will be renovated this year as part of the Play D.C. initiative. A meeting discussing the final design will be held on Tuesday, May 14th, at the Harry Thomas Recreation Center, located 1743 Lincoln Rd, NE from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

DPW’s Monthly HHW/E-Cycling/Shredding Drop-Off
The Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold its next monthly Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling/Personal Document Shredding drop-off this Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station. The monthly drop-off is held the first Saturday of every month, except holidays, at Ft. Totten, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, please click on the HHW link at www.dpw.dc.gov.
Chuck Brown Amphitheater Presentation by DGS
The Department of General Services (DGS) will hold a meeting to provide an update on the planning and design of the proposed Chuck Brown Amphitheater, based on feedback from the last presentation on March 23. The meeting will be held on Saturday, May 11th, at the Woodridge Library, located at 1801 Hamlin Street, NE, from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
