at Sunday's Bloomingdale Farmers Market: berries and cherries!

Hi BFM Fans,

Hope you are staying around this gorgeous weekend and coming to market because we are celebrating the longest days of  summer with cherries and berries.  (And I know it seemed like the longest wait we have ever had for them!)  Sweet cherries, raspberries, red currants, .  Come early for the full selection.  And make your first fruit salad of the summer.

BFM FREE BIKE CLINIC:  Every week our friends from The Bike House help you get your stead in shape from 11-1 at the market.  Kids, tots, Adults -- we got your bike covered.  And this will be a gorgeous weekend to ride.

Reid's Orchards: Cherries, raspberries, currants and time to make jam with the strawberries.  Sweet sugar snap peas, too.  If you want to reserve strawberries for jam, email Suzanne at Suzanne suzanne@reidsorchardwinery.com

Mountain View: -- Last week I featured their fabulous carrots raw in a bunch, still attached to the frilly green tops, carefully peeled and washed, and served in the bunch on a large red platter at a dinner party.  I told my guests to summon up their inner Bugs Bunny. It was a huge hit.  Zephyr squash, young collards, swiss chard, garlic scapes, kales, sweet salad turnips, beets, carrots, radishes, cut herbs,.

TIP from Charlie:  He told me today that he thinks Dino kale makes the best kale chips.  What do you think?

Whisked: Jenna's up for summer with her new berry pies (Strawberry, Blueberry or Raspberry Almond Frangipane Pie).  Need an idea for a brunch?  Try the new Zucchini Pesto or Kale and Cheddar quiches.  The packages of cookies and bars make great host gifts.

Truck Patch: Strawberries, raspberries, squash and squash blossoms to stuff with herbed goat cheese, dip in  a light batter and fry briefly.  Heaven.  Radishes, swiss chard, kales, mesclun greens, argula, a tower of beets.  All cuts of pork: loins, chops, ribs, shoulder.   The new country ham, bacon, jowl, salt pork, lard and scrapple.  Eggs. Chickens- whole and in parts.

Garner: Red and Yukon Gold potatoes, eggplant (if you come early),  Purple, yellow, green peppers. Cucumbers for pickling and eating. Green, Yellow and flat Italian beans.  Early Girl tomatoes. 7 different summer squashes. Sugar Snaps, Shelled peas. Leeks. Candy sweet onions (Northern Neck Vidalias). Spring Onions to chop or grill.  Swiss Chard. Mixed lettuces. Green, Toscano, Redbor Kales. Flowers. Beet. Cut Oregano and mint.  Did your basil suffer with all the rain?  I just picked up another one.

TIP: Long-cooked Italian beans.  Not everything needs to be al dente.  I love the sweetness you get from a long-cooked vegetable.  Yesterday I sauteed some onion and garlic and added the flat Italian beans that I roughly chopped. I let them cook until the were saturated with the aromatics.  Salted and added a few Muir Glen tomatoes, squished into the beans.  Cooked over a low heat until the beans were very soft and the tomatoes tasted lemony.  This is a good dish.

Number 1 Sons:  Will be 1 year old this weekend so celebrate summer by making their first birthday memorable.  If you have been reading the last few emails, you know that I have swooned over their New York Deli quality pickles (Koshers! Dills! Half sours!) but the kimchi and the sauerkraut are also superb.  If you think you do not like sauerkraut, give it another chance and sample it from the stand. 

Did You Know? Not only are these superbly tasty fermented foods, but they are also good for you --full of probiotics like Keswick yogurt.

Keswick Creamery:  NEW: Did you get a chance to try the mixed rand milk camembert-like cheese last week? cow and goat milk, bloomy rind, luscious full- flavored, melty innards.  A real French style cheese that is rare to find among local cheesemakers.  Keswick also has unusual tommes that are rindwashed weekly in local Troeg beers or local ciders or local wines.  Lots of fetas, the best yogurt in DC (I buy two every single week both for breakfast and for cooking.  Mark's Pimento Cheese, their Quark which is what cream cheese aspires to be without the emulsifiers and stabilizers.  Dragonsbreath, Vermeer.  There are 15 choices.

TIP: Now that we have cucumbers and the first high tunnel tomatoes, you might want some feta for a Greek Salad.  Don't forget to add a handful of slivered herbs. Salt the vegetable and let the juices run a bit before you add the olive oil. 

TIP: Yogurt is great at breakfast and with summer fruit but Keswick yogurt is like a food-friendly wine.  It improves nearly everything.  I add a dollop to cooked greens for a quick sauce.  I serve it with grilled food.  It has the perfect acidity.  In other words, I love it.   If you have not tried it yet, there are samples in tiny cups at the stand.

Panorama: Our French baker.  Croissants,  Pretzels, Breton Kouign Amann, Meringue, Palmier, Macaroons, Bear Claws, Breton Apple Tart, Almont Tart, Flant, Brioche, Danishes -- and those are just the pastries.  Baguettes, Rustiques,  Multigrain, Olive Oil Buns, Ciabattas, petit pains,Whole Wheat Boules, Ryes, Sourdoughs, Pumpernickel, Challah, mufins, scones.

Painted Hand: Sandy herself  is back this week with her naturally browsed goats, pasture raised rose veal, eggs, and Bloomingdogs' favorite liver treats.  Try the sausages.

North Mountain Pastures:  Brooks loves cured meats and the stand has lots plus bacons, sausages, eggs.  Ask about their popular meat CSA.
