Some folks have been concerned about the construction going on at North Capitol & Michigan.  This road work started this week (and will continue through the summer) as part of the DC Water effort to manage storm water flowing down hill toward Bloomingdale. I've received the attached documentation discussing the project.

IMPORTANT CONSTRUCTION UPDATE FOR
YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
MCMILLAN STORM STORAGE PROJECT

DC Water is implementing its Clean Rivers Project – Northeast Boundary Neighborhood Protection Project which consists of tunnels and storm water storage infrastructure to reduce flooding in the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park areas. The McMillan Storm Storage Project is a part of the Northeast Boundary Neighborhood Protection Project put forth by the Mayor’s Task Force on the Prevention of Flooding which was initiated in December 2012. DC Water will construct underground structures to divert up to 6 million gallons of stormwater into temporary holding tanks within the McMillan Sand Filtration Plant. This will delay millions of gallons of water from reaching the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park areas during heavy rain events.

Construction for this project will begin in June 2013 with a proposed completion date in March 2014. Overnight work will begin simultaneously on North Capitol Street NW and First Street NW from June 2013 until September 2013. To assist with minimizing traffic disruption, working hours for this portion of the project will be from 7:00pm until 5:00am, Monday through Friday until September 2013. Thereafter, construction work hours will be from 7:00am until 4:00pm Monday through Friday through the continuation of the project.

Other construction impacts and important information are as follows:

  • Traffic control, signage and protective barriers will be set up to maintain public safety during construction.
  • Temporary lane closures will occur on North Capitol Street near Michigan Ave on the North and South bound lanes
  • North Capitol Street NW median between Girard Street NW and Michigan Avenue NW will be removed.
  • At various times during construction, “No Parking” signs may be placed in certain areas in and around the work zone. Notifications regarding “No Parking” zones will be posted 72 hours prior to construction, as required by DDOT.
  • Noise and dust levels adjacent to the construction site will be closely monitored.
We thank you for your continuous support and cooperation and apologize for any inconveniences.

Gentlemen,

I've been fielding some inquiries about the construction that has started on North Capitol Street just south of Michigan Avenue.  Do you have any details about the nature, scope, and duration of this project? If so, would you please share those with me?  Likewise, can you tell me if and how this road work interrelates with the DC Water storm water management project going on at the McMillan Sand Filtration Site?

Thank you,
John
