Councilmember McDuffie Convenes a Ward 5 Public Safety and Crime Forum

This week, Councilmember McDuffie convened a public safety and crime forum to address the recent acts of violence seen throughout Ward 5. The forum brought together a full complement of public safety and justice officials with the goal of responding to residents’ concerns and identifying potential solutions.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was able to provide residents with the latest crime reports from the Fourth and Fifth Districts and address recent incidents like the Metropolitan Branch Trail attack, as well as the recent burglaries, sexual assaults, and homicides seen in the area. Additionally, residents were provided with helpful information from other panelists on how the criminal justice system operates and how each agency can better serve them.

Councilmember Addresses Residents at the Metropolitan Branch Trail

  

On Monday, Councilmember McDuffie joined the Friends of Edgewood Recreation Center, Eckington Civic Association, and Big Bear Cafe for a Safety Walk and Bike Event along the Metropolitan Branch Trail. The event addressed the recent attack that took place along the Trail.    

“Events like these send a strong message to those who seek to hurt our community,” said Councilmember McDuffie. “We must come together to protect our neighbors.”

Please Join Councilmember McDuffie This Tuesday for His State of the Ward Address!

To celebrate his first year in office, Councilmember McDuffie would like to invite all Ward 5 residents to join him on Tuesday, June 25^th, for his State of the Ward Address. The event will be an opportunity for the community to come together to reflect on the many accomplishments we have seen throughout Ward 5, as well as a chance for Councilmember McDuffie to outline his vision for the future of the Ward. The State of the Ward Address will be held at Luke C. Moore High School, located at 1001 Monroe Street, NE, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Parking will be available in the school’s parking lot or residents can utilize on-street parking. Residents may also use the Brookland Metro Station to access the site. We hope to see you there!

Update on the First Street Tunnel Project

On Wednesday, June 20, Councilmember McDuffie joined DC Water to provide the residents of Flagler Place and Adams Street, NW, with an update on the proposed scope of work for the Environmental Assessment phase of the First Street Tunnel portion of the Clean Rivers Project. The meeting allowed residents to hear first-hand what impact the First Street Tunnel Project will have on the neighborhood. Reminder: Brentwood Community Walk-Through

On Saturday, June 22^nd, Councilmember McDuffie will hold a community walk-through with the Metropolitan Police Department, Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Transportation, Department of Public Works, District Department of the Environment and Department of General Services in the Brentwood community. The purpose of the walk-through is to address a number of quality of life issues that have been brought to Councilmember McDuffie’s attention in recent weeks, such as public safety, cleanliness of the neighborhood and overall care of the Brentwood Recreation Center. Baseball Season is here! A trip to the ballpark is the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon. Please join Councilmember McDuffie for the Second Annual Ward 5 NATS NIGHT OUT taking place at Nationals Ball Park on Sunday, July 7th, beginning at 1:35 p.m.

Attend the Innovation Fund Update on June 26

The Mayor will hold a briefing on the implementation of The Innovation Fund (commonly known as the One City Fund) June 26 from 10:00 a.m. - Noon in the Old Council Chamber (441 4th St NW).

Terri Lee Freeman, President of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, will update attendees on the application and grant processes, timelines and other important details.

Although the name of the $15 million fund has changed, the purpose remains the same: to assist non-profit organizations in providing direct services to District residents and families in the areas of education, job training, health, senior services, arts, public safety, and the environment through a competitive and transparent grant process.

Monday, June 24th–The Gateway Civic Association meeting will take place at the Victory Christian Church, located at 3100 Adams Street, N.E., beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday, June 25^th – The Trinidad Neighborhood Association meeting will take place at the Trinidad Recreation Center, located at 1350 Childress Street, N.E., beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, June 26^th – Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5B will hold its monthly meeting at the ANC 5B Office, located at 1322 Irving Street, N.E., beginning at 7:00 p.m.
