Thanksgiving Wishes

Dear Residents,
Thanksgiving is an occasion to spend time with family, friends, and loved ones. It is also a time to dedicate ourselves to those who are less fortunate.
I am truly thankful for the opportunity to serve Ward 5.
Wishing you and your family a happy and safe Thanksgiving and holiday season.

Ward 5 Highlights

Community Meeting on Brookland Middle School

McDuffie Brookland Middle School
On Saturday, November 16, Councilmember McDuffie hosted a community meeting to discuss the construction of the Brookland Middle School.  At the meeting it was announced that DGS will not pursue extended construction hours and will work only during standard DCRA work hours, 7 AM -  7 PM, Monday through Saturday. The schedule will permit students and staff to occupy the building for the 2015-2016 school year. Construction will be completed in January 2015.

Legislative & Committee Updates

At Tuesday's Committee of the Whole meeting, Councilmember McDuffie introduced the Service Member, Spouse, and Veteran Licensure and Certification Improvement Act of 2013 to streamline the District’s occupational and professional licensing procedures for current service members, their spouses and domestic partners, and veterans. When service members and their partners move across state lines or leave the military, they often face difficulties either securing a job or transferring their license/certificate to another jurisdiction. Spouses are particularly affected, as 35% work in fields requiring licensure/certification (e.g. teaching or nursing). The bill provides for expedited processing, temporary licensing, reciprocity between jurisdictions, and the consideration of military experience for stateside requirements.

DPR Fees

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will convene a series of open community meetings to offer the public an opportunity to comment on proposed changes to DPR’s permit fees and regulations.
DPR will solicit opinions on a proposal to revise its permit fees from a flat rate to an hourly rate, and to discuss a plan on a new “fee-based use” permit for applicants who charge their participants for activities and for priority of use. DPR plans to examine the use of its facilities for fund-raising activities, the sale of foods and beverages, and to establish procedures that comply with District of Columbia law, and allow clear guidelines for these commercial activities.
The meetings will be held the following days and locations:
  • Monday, November 25, 2013, at 6:30-8:00 pm, at Deanwood Recreation Center (1350 49th St., NE)
  • Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 6:30-8:00 pm, at Kennedy Recreation Center (1401 7th St., NW)

DPR Thanksgiving Activities

DPR invites everyone to come out and enjoy a host of Thanksgiving events, activities, programs and celebrations at various recreation and community centers throughout the District of Columbia.
Patrons can participate in Thanksgiving Day dinners, banquets, fall festival tournaments, roller skating, moonlight breakfasts, feed-the-homeless programs, holiday treats and more. Select community and recreation centers have chosen to celebrate this "season of giving" by serving as collection sites for coat drives or canned/non-perishable food drives.  For more information on these events, visit any DPR center or DPR's Events Calendar.
