Subject: Thank you

My Dear Friends,

With your support and encouragement, I began a new journey of public service by becoming a candidate for the office of attorney general for our great city. Unfortunately, I have recently been informed by counsel that standing as a candidate for office is not permitted under the Hatch Act as long as I continue to serve in the federal government.

Given the significant possibility that the election will not be allowed to take place next year, I have determined that I can best serve in my current role in the Obama Administration. As a result, I am writing to let you know that I have decided to suspend my campaign to become Washington, DC’s first elected attorney general.

I am and will continue to be thankful for your support and encouragement in the early stages of this campaign and hope that you will continue to join me in fighting for our rights, as proud Washingtonians, to have a government of our choosing.  You have my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation. I look forward to continuing this fight together.

Sincerely,

Smitty
