Councilmember McDuffie's Arts Open House Reception

On Wednesday, Councilmember McDuffie and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) hosted an Arts Open House Reception in his suite at the Wilson Building. Over 50 guests were in attendance including Lionell Thomas, Executive Director, DCCAH, Lavania Wohlfarth, Ward 5 Commissioner and Vice Chair, DCCAH, and a host of other D.C. Councilmembers, artists, and guests. Featured artists included Sam Gilliam, Raul Jarquin, Deborah Willis, Susan Muniak, Volkmar Wentzel, Anita Philyaw, and Michael Crossett. Councilmember McDuffie expressed his appreciation of the arts, with a specific interest in black and white photography.

Legislative & Committee Updates

On Thursday, January 2, the Council’s Transportation & the Environment Committee will hold a public hearing on Bill 20-368, the “Air Quality Amendment Act of 2013,” a bill authored by Councilmember McDuffie. The hearing will begin at 11:00 a.m. in Room 412 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. The “Air Quality Amendment Act of 2013” establishes procedures for receiving, monitoring, and responding to air quality complaints and increases the maximum penalties for air quality violations. Read more about the bill on Councilmember McDuffie's website.  Councilmember McDuffie invites Ward 5 residents to testify at the hearing or submit written testimony. Anyone wishing to testify should contact Ms. Aukima Benjamin, staff assistant to the Committee on Transportation and the Environment, at (202) 724-8062 or via e-mail atabenjamin@dccouncil.us. Councilmember Gives Remarks at Janice McCree Naming Event in Langston Carver Terrace

Last Friday, Councilmember McDuffie extended greetings at the Janice McCree Naming Event at the Langston Carver Terrace Community Center.
Ms. McCree was a native Washingtonian and active citizen, who engaged in her community from the early age of 12 years old. She was an activeparticipant in the Langston Dwellings community for 55 years and demonstrated outstanding dedication to her community by serving as the President of the Langston Dwellings Resident Council for more than 20 years.  "It is because of this outstanding legacy of community service and activism," stated Councilmember McDuffie, "that I am pleased to honor her with a ceremonial resolution, the Janice Wade McCree Posthumous Ceremonial Recognition Resolution of 2013, from the Council and to join the city's leaders in dedicating the Janice McCree Community Center."

Councilmember McDuffie hosts DC Water First Street Tunnel Project and Consolidated Utility Work Update in Bloomingdale

On Monday, December 9, Councilmember McDuffie hosted an update meeting on the First Street Tunnel Project and consolidated utility work. The purpose of the meeting was to provide all impacted residents and community at large with the opportunity to hear how DC Water and utility companies are collaborating on all current work.
Representatives from the Department of Health, District Department of Transportation, DC Water, Washington Gas and PEPCO provided updates and fielded questions from the audience.

The Zoning Regulations Review is Extended!

The ZC received many requests from the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions asking for more time to comment on the proposed zoning re-write. In response, the Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing specifically to hear testimony from the ANCs.
The Zoning Commission, in conjunction with Chairman Mendelson, will hold a public hearing to receive comments from all ANCs on the proposed text for the Zoning Regulations for ZC Case No. 08-06A on Thursday, January 30, 2014. All testimony received will be made part of the record. The hearing will be held in Room 412 of the John A. Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20004 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. or until the ZC recesses. Each ANC will be allotted up to 8 minutes to highlight their written testimony on the proposed regulations. Each Single Member District Commissioner, should they choose to testify, will be allotted up to 3 minutes.
Following this public hearing, the Zoning Commission will conduct four community-based public hearings to hear from constituents. The Office of Zoning will post flyers with dates and locations.

Tuesday, December 17 – The Ward 5 Council on Education meeting will hold its monthly meeting at Lamond-Riggs Library, located at 5401 South Dakota Ave, NE, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, December 17 – ANC 5E will hold its monthly meeting at Trinity University, located at 125 Michigan Ave N.E., beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday, December 18 – Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5A will hold its monthly meeting at UDC’s Bertie Backus Campus, located at 5171 South Dakota Ave NE. Room 125, beginning at 6:45 p.m.
Wednesday, December 18 – Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5C will hold its monthly meeting at MPD’s Fifth District Police Station Community Room, located at 1805 Bladensburg Road N.E., beginning at 7 p.m.
Thursday, December 20 – The Ft. Lincoln Civic Association meeting will hold its monthly meeting at the Wesley House Senior Apartments, located at 3400 Joshua Barney Drive, N.E., beginning at 6:30 p.m.
