I just spoke to a neighbor on 1st st who informed me that there is some plan involving the VMP McMillian project to widen 1st st north of RI ave, on a permanent basis, by removing all the tree boxes on the east and west sides of the street in order to widen 1st st. Has any one heard about this and can you post some info about this on this blog. There is a meeting concerning this on Monday at the church on Ust and 2nd at 7pm to discuss it.
This would be news to me. DC Water and DDOT have decided (for now) to remove the treeboxes and sidewalk on the east side first from about 2027 to 2105 to allow for two-way traffic along first while the V Street diversion chamber is built. Although this is a temporary change, neighbors are, quite rightfully, not happy about the street coming up to the wall at the end of their front gardens. The meeting tomorrow is to discuss that change.
Besides, let's be real. Whatever else I may think of VMP, they are not stupid. They would not just days before the last of the first set of zoning hearings talk about a plan that would guarantee a full neighborhood rebellion against the plan. Of the handful of Create McMillan signs that are in Bloomingdale, the bulk of them are along First Street. I have no doubt that those people with signs would not support the VMP plan any longer if widening First Street were put on the table. If such a plan is in the back of someone's mind, we will not hear of it until long after the permits are issued and the project started, and then someone will announce the first and only "traffic mitigation" project south of the McMillan site itself.
Assume VMP folks are familiar with this blog. Would be great if they could just check in with Scott and shoot that one down. Seems like a nonstarter for the community.
