We were troubled by the recent post that seemed to encourage the signage on the second floor exterior at 2034 First Street. We know there has been tension in the community regarding construction activities in support of the First Street Tunnel Project and other area projects, but we encourage residents to engage DC Water directly to present their concerns. Specifically, DC Water established a dedicated 24/7 hotline for any issues and concerns that residents may have regarding the First Street Tunnel Project. The hotline number is 1 (844) FST-INFO or 1(844-378-4636).
Beyond the hotline, DC Water is also providing the following critical programs and services to residents directly affected by the First Street Tunnel Project:
• Innovative Alternative Parking Areas (APA) for affected residents;
• 24/7 home shuttle service to and from the APA’s;
• Special needs survey to accommodate our most vulnerable residents;
• Pre- and post-construction conditions survey for existing structures near the construction;
• Construction instrumentation and monitoring to protect nearby structures throughout the
construction work;
• Enhanced garbage collection for homes impacted by street closures;
• Additional rodent and pest control;
• First Street Tunnel Forum to provide formal communication channels between the
neighborhood, DC Water, and our contractor;
• Noise and vibration specialist on-site; and
• Use of ground freeze technology to reduce the construction footprint and minimize noise
and dust in the construction staging areas.
DC Water asks for the community’s continued patience as we begin this critical work to address a decades-old issue that threatens the public health and safety of residents in the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods. As someone who lived in the neighborhood during the flooding and backups in the summer of 2012, we hope you appreciate the importance of this project and the community outreach efforts we’ve made to date.
