Greetings Mr. Lisle,

I cannot speak on behalf of the Bloomingdale Civic Association; however, as Bloomingdale resident I greatly appreciate knowing DC Water's is giving special interest attention for possible flooding to the Bloomingdale community ahead of tropical storm Arthur, which may turn into a hurricane.

Mr. Lisle,

Thank you for your prompt response and details.  It should give all of us great comfort knowing that DC Water has already planned for a possible storm.

Kind regards,

Mr. Brannum,

On behalf of our General Manager, I’d like to give you a status update on our emergency response planning for the upcoming weather event.  The most recent National Weather Forecast for this region calls for approximately 2.5 inches of rain beginning Wednesday night extending into Friday.  A tropical storm warning has been issued for marine craft in the Cape Fear area.

DC Water will continue to monitor this storm as will the District’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA).   DC Water is currently staging equipment at our most vulnerable storm water stations to reduce potential street flooding.   We are also staging an emergency generator at a critical water pump station.   Staff is also working out shift schedules in the event that we have to implement our emergency response plan.  As part of this planning process we are also securing sandbags for the Bloomingdale area and LeDroit Park area in the event they are needed. Further, sewer service crews will be inspecting catch basins in our flood prone areas.

Our plans are to locate sewer services crews at First St and Rhode Island NW to distribute sandbags in the event the National Weather Service issues a tropical storm warning for this region. Based on the current forecast we anticipate some street flooding but hopefully nothing more significant. However, we can mobilize in less than two hours if the weather forecast changes.

Best,

John

Greetings all, NWS is anticipating a hurricane to hit the DC area on Thursday, July 3rd and Friday, July 4th. Is it appropriate for BCA Exec Comm (President) to issue a series of public awareness notices to the Bloomingdale community to prepare for possible flooding this 4th of July weekend?  There may be people planning to leave the city and forget to do some necessary mitigating to prevent unwelcome flooding. Should BCA find out what DC Water might be preparing?  Should BCA ask DPW for sandbags ahead of the NWS hurricane issuance? Should BCA develop a coordinated Bloomingdale emergency response plan with the District, CM McDuffie and DC Water?

Robert
