FST UPDATE:
As many Bloomingdale residents are aware, the First Street Tunnel Project is now under construction at all four Construction Staging Areas (CSA) and in the west alley along First Street from Adams to Thomas Street NW. By the end of September SKJD will be out of the west alley and fully established in the CSAs at Adams and Flagler, First and V, and First and Thomas. With the exception of the impacts caused by the CSAs, pedestrian and vehicular access, as well as garbage and recycling pick–up, will return to normal. The CSA closures will continue for the next 15 to 18 months.
DC Water’s First Street Tunnel Team is working with MPD, DDOT, ANC Commissioners, Tunnel Forum members and residents to establish each CSA. We are committed to making improvements that will better control and direct traffic with these recent changes. Keep in mind, it will take some time for all of us to adjust to the changes. MPD has been and will continue to be on site to provide enforcement. Reckless driving, speeding and dangerous behaviors required enforcement.
We have received reports that some First Street Tunnel workers are parking in the neighborhood. We have a dedicated off street parking area for those involved in the project and we have informed staff to use it. Please call the 24/7 Hotline to report the issue and/or call DPW - Parking Enforcement so the appropriate authority can issue tickets to all violators.
This was a tough week for traffic in the neighborhood. On September 10th a car accident on North Capital Street closed the street and redirected traffic into the community. On Thursday, September 11, a home-invasion and shooting on North Capital Street along with the pursuit of the suspects cause another disruption, then President Obama’s motorcade traveled down North Capital just before 6PM so traffic again was diverted into the neighborhood. Today, PEPCO began work in front of 2036/2034 First Street and DC Water sewer services was doing emergency work at a home in the 2100 block. PEPCO will continue the work on Saturday through next week. DC Water’s contractor, SKJD will be working in the Thomas Street CSA on Saturday, 9/13/14.
Traffic and parking, along with an update on the construction will be on the agenda at the next Tunnel Forum meeting. We look forward to seeing you there.
In the interim, if you have questions or concerns about the FST Project please call the 24/7 Hotline at 1(844)FST-INFO or 1(844)378-4636.
