While you are planning your Halloween parties, you might want to consider this upside down French apple specialty: A Tarte Tatin. It is the best and prettiest rustic dessert you can make in prime apple season with lots of buttery apple chunks, caramel and a choice of crusts-- a single crust draped on top SO IT CANNOT GET SOGGY. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/22/dining/a-foolproof-tarte-tatin-recipe-from-gotham-bar-and-grill.html Another rustic treat is this one pot bean/pea-kale-sausage bit of comfort food that is Southern or Portuguese (Caldo Verde comes close) http://www.seriouseats.com/2014/10/black-eyed-peas-kale-andouille-sausage-stew-one-pot.html. Another favorite recipe for this time of year are spinach/bacon or pepper tartines. Open faced toasts have taken over San Francisco but the French have been doing that as Tartines for decades (centuries?). We have plenty of spinach, bacon and red peppers at market.

Take Halloween Back for Apples!
Every year I buy a box of kid-sized apples to give out at Halloween and only1 kid has turned me down in years, especially after I tell them that these apples are sweetier and juicier than any candy they get. (The Moms are always thrilled). Why give out bags of lousy candy when you can give out baby apples. You can always dip them in caramel if you feel they have to be candied, right?

TIP: Kohlrabi in German is related to the words for cabbage and turnip and for good reason. They are chameleons: grated raw they make the best slaw; chopped and sauteed in butter, they taste like young turnips. Add sauteed onions and then water and puree and you have cabbage potato soup without either cabbage or potatoes. Good roasted in chunks too. Ivy Brand made them the secret ingredient in lettuce tacos 2 weeks ago.

TIP: Check our fb page for Keith and Megan's gorgeous cabbage rolls. I grew up on cabbage rolls -- we ate them all winter and I love varying them. Carnivorous, vegetarian, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, tomato based, lemon and olive oil syrupy -- slowly braised cabbage rolls will take any stuffing and any seasoning and make them delicious. KESWICK: Not just great cheese but also real baby ginger (no brown peel, no stick in your teeth fiber, aromatic and perfect for : stir fries, ginger tea, ginger chicken, ginger syrup, ginger beer. The young turmeric is a revelation if you think of turmeric as that dry yellow powder in Indian curries. Duck eggs are few but so rich in flavor. And the cheeses: pure Jersey cow and mixed milk goat and Jersey. 15-20 choices every week. Grilled Kimcheese with Pano bread, Vermeer (or Dragonsbreath) and a slather of Number 1 Sons kimchi has become my go-to grilled cheese sandwich. The tomatoes at Garner and Ivy Brand still crave feta cheese. A craft beer with a Tomme that has been rind washed weekly in Troeg is a great match. Apples, pears and cheese are classic snacks. Need a cheese plate for a dinner: Frosty Morning, a Valancay, a classic Lesher and a new wave Morbier are all interesting choices.

Red, White Yellow Yukon Potatoes. Lots of Greens.
PANORAMA: They have a great sale every week This week it will be their Brownies. And have you tried the Parisian Macarons? Gorgeous jewel colors -- box them and bring them to a dinner. Lots of rolls and buns. French bread baked by French bakers – baguettes, croissants, palmiers, Danish, scones, Breton specialties. The Kouign Amann wowed people 2 weeks ago. (Ask for a sample from Adriana).Whole wheat, rye, pumpernickel, rustiques, country, sour dough – boules and sandwich breads too.
TIP: Challah makes the best French toast.
NUMBER 1 SONS: The newest cucumbers have been especially crisp and tasty. The half sours are great. WHISKED: Jenna says: Our featured pie this week is a pumpkin chocolate pie. I was never really sold on the combo of pumpkin and chocolate until I tried it, but the bittersweet flavor of the chocolate, squashy pumpkin, and pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves), really hit it out of the park.
