DPW Observes Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11

Sanitation services will be suspended. Parking regulations will be enforced around the National Mall for the Concert for Valor

(Washington, DC) The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today how services will be affected Tuesday, November 11, 2014, when the District observes Veterans Day. Trash and recycling collections and street and alley cleaning will be suspended. Parking enforcement will be suspended, except around the National Mall where all parking regulations, including “Emergency No Parking” will be enforced and vehicles may be towed. Services will resume Wednesday, November 12.

Trash/recycling collections: In once-a-week neighborhoods, Monday’s trash and recycling collections will follow the normal schedule. Tuesday’s trash and recycling collections will “slide” to Wednesday, Wednesday’s will slide to Thursday and so on through Saturday when Friday’s collections will be made. Where DPW collects trash twice-a-week, Monday trash and recycling collections will follow the normal schedule while Thursday’s collections will be made Friday. Tuesday’s and Friday’s collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday. Recycling collections, which are made once-a-week citywide, will slide to the next day through Saturday. DC regulations allow cans to be in the public space between 6:30 pm the day before trash/recycling collection and 8 pm of the collection day. Cans left in the public space outside of these times are subject sanitation enforcement.

Parking Enforcement: “Emergency No Parking” and safety regulations, e.g., crosswalks, bus stops, fire hydrants, will be enforced around the National Mall for the Concert for Valor. Elsewhere, DPW will suspend enforcement of expired meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions. Also, booting, towing and abandoned vehicle removal will be suspended. Citywide parking enforcement resumes Wednesday, November 12.

Ft. Totten: The Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed November 11 and will reopen Wednesday, November 12 from 1 pm to 5 pm. DPW will conduct its weekly household hazardous waste/e-cycling drop-off Saturday, November 15. On the first Thursday of each month, DPW accepts household hazardous waste and e-cycling between 1 pm and 5 pm but no documents for shredding will be accepted because DPW cannot secure those items until the vendor is on site the first Saturday of each month. The next day residents may drop off personal documents to be shredded is Saturday, December 6, 8 am to 3 pm. For more details about HHW/e-cycling/document shredding go to http://dpw.dc.gov/service/household-hazardous-waste-e-cycling-document-shredding.
