Every building in the District contributes to the look and feel of the city and supports the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
The historic status of a building or neighborhood offers some protection against incompatible development, but development happening outside of historic areas matters too.
All of our neighborhoods are valued by those who call them home, and zoning is the most basic tool for reinforcing the desirable qualities of an area by managing the scale and use of buildings. For neighborhoods and buildings not subject to the District's Historic Preservation Ordinance, zoning is the primary tool available to ensure the compatibility of new construction and consistency with existing development.

  1. So it follows that the Zoning Commission is responsible for the UGLY pop-ups we see about in Bloomingdale dc! Apparently they haven't done the right job so far or there would not be a petition against any more pop-ups! They'd better get on the job or they might get popped off their cushy commission seats!
