AU graduate shot and killed nearShaw-Howard Metro station

 August 15 at 7:29 PM

A man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in the Shaw neighborhood in Northwest Washington, a few blocks from where three people were shot and wounded Tuesday night.
The victim was identified by police as Matthew C. Shlonsky, 23, of Northeast. Online information indicated that he was a member of the class of 2014 at American University and was on the honor roll.
Shlonsky, who grew up in the Cleveland area and played ice hockey, was killed just before 5 p.m. at Seventh and S streets NW, near the Shaw-Howard University Metro station.

An intern in 2013 in the office of Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Shlonsky was the author of a 2014 paper on the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement. There was no indication that he was the intended target of the startling flurry of late afternoon gunfire in Shaw.
He died in the day’s second homicide.
