The BLOOMINGDALE VILLAGE
SQUARE (BVS) PROJECT is one of the 16 grantees of the DC Humanities
Council to be celebrated at a SHOWCASE ON DECEMBER 10! BVS
extends you an invitation to attend this free event at which dinner will be
served.
This BVS project is an effort
of the Bloomingdale Civic Association (BCA) and funded by DC Humanities
Council, ANC 5E and BCA. The project focuses on bringing to life two
recommendations of the DC Office of Planning's Mid-City East Small Area
Plan: 1) increasing community identity and 2) strenghtening a sense
of 'place'. We seek to address these through engagement, community
history, and design of public space in the 1st Street and Rhode Island Avenue
NW area, with the goal of promoting a stable, inclusive multiracial
neighborhood.
At the Showcase, we will
launch: a) our 20-minute 'presentation version' video of oral history
interviews of about 25 persons; b) a booklet of the 'comprehensive version' of
a unique Bloomingdale History Timeline, 1800 - 2015 focusing
on the interactions between social/institutional events and architectural/land
use events (complete with photos, factoids, and references); c)
design ideas (e.g., signage, landscape, streetscape, public art, electronic
community bulletin board, etc.) for a Village Square centered at the 1st
& Rhode Island area; and d) other BVS informational materials.
We hope you will come to the
Showcase to support the BVS project and the Bloomingdale neighborhood, and to
provide us your feedback!

us as we celebrate Washington, DC history on December 10! From the
architecture of the Franciscan Monastery to the soul stirring music of DC
natives Billy Stewart and Van McCoy, this year's group of DC Community
Heritage Project grantees are offering a unique and eclectic look at
the city's past. This year's showcase will be held at Richard Wright School
for Journalism and Media PCS.
Find
out about the historical development of neighborhoods like Bloomingdale and
River Terrace. Hear how young people are engaging with Washington's past in
new and exciting ways. Learn how you and your neighbors can receive support
for similar projects.
