The DC Preservation League was founded in 1971 as Don’t Tear It Down!
to save the Old Post Office on Pennsylvania Avenue. Can you imagine
Washington’s skyline without its recognizable clock tower? How would
the nation’s capital look without its historic squares, circles,
rowhouse neighborhoods or its vibrant and historic downtown? Whether
you are a native Washingtonian, a long-time resident, or a new
arrival, I am sure you appreciate the city’s character and want
to preserve its historic resources, while allowing the city to
continue to flourish.
Through the work of DCPL’s professional staff and dedicated
volunteers, the organization has been the lead advocate for the
balance necessary to ensure that preservation interests are met while
encouraging the city’s growth.
I hope that you see the value DCPL offers and choose to support us
financially with an end-of-year gift or by becoming a member. It’s
through the financial support of individuals like you that we are
able to help guide the character of Washington as a vital place to
live, work, and visit.
Preservation has proven to be a significant economic driver in the
nation’s capital, and your support would enable our efforts to
protect the city’s irreplaceable historic and cultural resources to
continue. In 2015, DCPL researched and prepared documentation on
six properties including Howard Divinity School, Railway Express
Building, and Emory United Methodist Church to be nominated to as DC
Landmarks. Also, DCPL reviewed projects at St. Elizabeths, the Old
Naval Observatory, and other major development projects in commercial
areas across the city. We were pleased to provide more than $100,000
in funding from the Preservation Initiatives Grant Fund to
individuals and nonprofit groups to support local preservation
efforts. In addition, DCPL staff continued to provide technical
assistance to community groups interested in protecting their
neighborhoods.
All funds raised from this appeal support DCPL’s advocacy and
education work and will enable us to continue representing the voice
of historic preservation in the District of Columbia.
