Town Hall Series on Historic Designation
Walt Cain <waltcain@googlemail.com ;: Dec 09 12:20PM -0500

Historic Designation for Eckington

In October 2015 the Eckington Civic Association (ECA) formally began the application process for neighborhood historic designation by partnering with the historic research team of QED Associates to compile a historic survey documenting the rich architectural, cultural, and social history of the Eckington neighborhood. Historic designation brings with it many benefits, including giving community residents an active voice in development and preserving a neighborhood’s unique sense of place.

As part of the designation application process ECA is embarking on a community outreach initiative aimed at providing residents with information about Eckington’s history, the historic designation process, and what successful designation would mean for residents. Through the winter and spring of 2016, ECA is hosting a town hall series where a panel of representatives from the city will provide information about historic designation and answer questions from the community. The town halls are scheduled for January 11, March 16, and May 9 at 7 PM at the Summit at St. Martin’s (116 T St. NE). The first town hall panel will include representatives from the DC Historic Preservation Office, the DC Preservation League, and QED Associates. ECA will use the feedback and questions received at each town hall to inform the agenda of the next event and to provide additional information to address resident questions.

ECA has created a page on its website dedicated to the historic designation effort where the community can learn about upcoming events and find information about historic preservation generally. The page includes a document library of useful information pulled from the DC government and outside sources about the history of Eckington, the historic designation process in DC, and the impact of historic designation on a community. The webpage can be found at www.eckingtoncivicassociation.org/historic-designation
.
ECA is committed to an open and inclusive process that builds a sense of ownership, confidence, and support within the community. We believe that it is not only Eckington’s beautiful buildings that make our neighborhood unique, but the stories and experiences of the people and families who call Eckington home. ECA welcomes questions, comments, or suggestions at HistoricEckington@gmail.com
