The latest on McMillan: A playground, a plaza and a slap on the wrist

There is very little standing between Vision McMillan Partners and a go order for its $720 million redevelopment of a historic, D.C.-owned sand filtration plant in Northwest D.C.

With funding in place, the D.C. Council's tepid support locked up and final plan submissions turned in, it appears the District's most controversial development project could break ground as soon as the fall.

This week, the team of EYA, Trammell Crow Co. and Jair Lynch Real Estate Partners, with the District government, submitted final plans for key future public spaces on the 25-acre McMillan plot — community center, “walking museum,” playground and plaza. The Historic Preservation Review Board package includes several notable changes to the previously adopted plan, including the removal of a fountain in favor of a grand staircase, the relocation of the amphitheater, and the redesign of the plaza as a “gathering space.”

The HPRB will consider the final design on either May 26 or June 2.
