New Community Association Staff Member: SaQueita
Jackson
We would like to welcome our new staff member, SaQueita Jackson. She
will be assisting Community Association Director Maybelle Taylor
Bennett with carrying out our mission. Ms. Jackson believes in our
vision, which is an ever-evolving respectful, productive and mutually
beneficial relationship between the University and its neighbors.
Ms. Jackson is committed to directly engaging Howard University’s
neighbors through open communications, timely responses to concerns,
the pursuit of meaningful partnerships and the delivery of service.
She brings new innovative ideas and commitment to the department. If

In the fall
of 2014, President Wayne A.I. Frederick announced plans to relocate
the University's School of Divinity from its East Campus location
at 14th
and Shepherd Streets NE to the West Campus with the
School of Law. The University's Board of Trustees recommended
that the University engage the Urban Land Institute (ULI)
Advisory Services Panel to provide insight on the potential
for the redevelopment of the East
Campus site.

Fall Phlebotomy Certificate Training Program Begins
Aug. 27
The
Department of Clinical Laboratory Science in the College of Nursing
and Allied Health Sciences will conduct interviews and an English
test for the Phlebotomy Certificate Training Program on Sat.,
Aug. 27, at 10 a.m.
The first day of class is scheduled for Sat., Sept. 10, and
will run for 12 consecutive Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3
p.m. Interested applicants can pick up a brochure outside Room
307 in the Allied Health Science Building and should bring completed
applications on Aug. 29. For more information, contact

Back to School Physicals at Howard
University Hospital
Howard
University Faculty Practice Plan will host the event "Getting
Kids Ready to Go back to School" every Saturday this August, 8
a.m.-11:30 a.m., to help parents prepare their children to
go back to school. The event will take place in Howard University
Hospital, Towers Bldg., 2041 Georgia Ave., NW, Ste. 3200,
(Family Medicine) and Ste. 3300 (Pediatrics), Washington, DC,
20060. Both suites are located on the building's third floor.
Parents can bring their children to update their pediatric
immunization records and receive their annual school/sports
physicals. No appointments are necessary. Walk-Ins only! Please do
not forget the school forms and immunization records! For

UPCOMING EVENTS
HU Day Of Service Aug. 19
The Howard
University Day of Service (HUDOS) will
take place, Friday, August 19, 2016. Currently, over 800
student participants are registered and scheduled to serve at over
40 locations across the city. HUDOS will provide an
opportunity for incoming students of all faiths and backgrounds to
embrace the University’s motto, “Truth and Service.” Modeled after
Howard University's nationally recognized Alternative Spring Break
program, it will provide service-learning opportunities as a part
of the students’ introductory experience to the University.
Current Howard University students, faculty, staff,
administrators and alumni will volunteer across the Washington DC
metropolitan area. Howard University Day of Service 2016 will focus
on community building through seven service-learning initiatives
addressing: educational disparities, environmental injustices,
health disparities, homelessness and poverty, violence, police and
community relationships, and voter registration. This service
learning experience will allow Howard University students to
discover the power of ethical leadership and civic responsibility
while becoming acquainted with Washington, DC.
Chapel Services Resume Aug. 21
The Howard University Andrew Rankin Memorial
Chapel’s Sunday Chapel Service in Cramton Auditorium will resume
for the new academic year on August 21, 2016 with Rev. Dr. Lewis M.
Anthony who is the Episcopal Director for Ecumenical Affairs in the
Mid-Atlantic II Episcopal District of the A. M. E. Zion
Church. Rev. Anthony is also the Pastor of St. Lucille A.M.E.
Zion Church here in Washington, DC.
The Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel has compiled an exciting array of
inspiring speakers for the services that will be held each Sunday
during the academic year at 11:00am in Cramton Auditorium. The
previous week’s recorded service is broadcast on WHUR-FM 96.3 at 11
a.m on Sundays with a special live broadcast for Easter Sunday
Service.
Barry Place Project
Howard University, R.I.S.E and Gateway Investment
Partners are developing a six-story, LEED Gold, mixed-use building
at the northeast corner of Barry Pl. and Sherman Ave. The
building will consist of 319 apartment units, including 36
affordable housing units, 11,500 sq. ft. of retail, and 144 parking
spaces.
The developers’ land will be
consolidated with Howard’s to create a 1.35-acre
leasehold. All land owned by the developer will be
conveyed to Howard. The strictly maintained improvements will
also be conveyed to Howard at the conclusion of lease
term. The project broke ground in summer 2016 and is
scheduled for completion by late 2017.

Did
You Know?
The Georgia
Avenue Community Development Task Force's 4th Biennial
Community Review was held Sat. Aug. 6, 9a.m. - 4 p.m. in
the Department of Architecture at Howard's College of
Engineering and Architecture. The purpose of the event was to discuss
topics affecting those who live, work, learn and own
businesses within the Lower Georgia Avenue community. The event:
gave community members a platform to discuss their vision of the
proposed Lower Georgia Avenue Main Street program; provided them with
a better understanding of the planned unit development (PUD) process;
and informed them of recent and planned Howard University development
projects. For additional information and future meetings or

The Office of Off-Campus Housing and Community Engagement (OCHCE) has
spent the 2016 summer months engaged in enhancing community
relationships and partnerships. Staff attended the International Town
and Gown Association (ITGA) annual conference in Chicago; attended
civic associations meetings; met with community partners; identified
off-campus housing options; and entered into DCRA University Housing
Initiative partnership. Most recently, staff attended the National
Night Out activities and the Ward 1 Pool Party, sponsored by Council
member Brianne K. Nadeau.
