Bertha Holliday: Bloomingdale Village Square Update #6

BVS UPDATE #6

As many of you are aware, the Bloomingdale Civic Association received a grant from the DC Humanities Council for initial activities of the Bloomingdale Village Square  (BVS) Project, which involved videotaping of oral  history interviews, drafting and publishing an innovative 48-page timeline of the  Social and Architectural  History of Bloomingdale:  1800-2015, development of a detailed 32-slide detailed Architectural and Design Plan , and drafting of 2 brochures describing the project and a Final Report  (for more info, go to www.bloomingdalecivicassociation/villagecenter ).  BVS is now in its Phase 2  focused on developing funding and project management partnerships with DC agencies and public and private foundations for the implementation of the 10-year BVS Plan.

As part of its Phase 2 efforts, BVS has joined the DC Living Heritage Network (DCLHN)/ DC Cultural Plan Development effort.  BVS seeks to contribute to this effort by (a) sharing its strategy  throughout the City for using the humanities (including history/heritage and design) to strengthen neighborhoods, and (b) promoting  a City-wide discussion of possible funding mechanisms targeted to neighborhoods to support  permanent programs and improvements based on plans derived from humanities-focused efforts.

BVS  ENCOURAGES YOUR PARTICIPATION IN DCLHN AND DC CULTURAL PLAN EFFORTS -- ESPECIALLY YOUR ATTENDANCE AT ITS MEETINGS IN NW WASHINGTON ON OCT. 18 (as described in the following forwarded message).   Lend us YOUR ideas, and support BVS and the strengthening of neighborhoods through use of history, culture, and design.

Subject: Reminder- October DC Cultural Plan Community Forums

Dear DCLHN Colleagues:

Thank you for your interest in the DC Living Heritage Network (DCLHN).  This notice is a reminder of the upcoming October DC Cultural Plan meetings sponsored by the DC Office of Planning. I encourage everyone on this post to attend and provide your own recommendations as well as press for the Cultural Plan to include support for humanities, heritage and preservation including commitments of resources for the following:
  1. preserve and disseminate the memories, stories, and hyper-local cultures of Washington DC residents;
  2.  build capacity and provide physical space for Washington cultural organizations, producers and scholars;
  3. prepare young people to understand the history and culture of the city so that they can find and hold jobs in the burgeoning creative economy and take leadership of the city;
  4.  provide opportunities for citizens to engage in vitally needed civic discussions on the city's challenges and opportunities.
Below is a list of the Cultural Plan meetings. Please make it a priority to attend at least one of the October meetings. Also, see below for the cultural plan website and email address for more information. Share your responses to these meetings at DCLHN Tuesday morning meetings and on October 27th.

The Office of Planning, in partnership with the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities, will host community conversations every Tuesday in October 2016. A total of four events will be held, with one in each quadrant of the District.  All events will follow the same format and agenda. RSVPs are strongly encouraged.
