HOWARD STUDENTS FEATURED IN "SEE CHANGE DC"

The DC Office of Planning sponsored a Creative Placemaking Initiative at the end of the summer featuring special neighborhoods within the city, one of which was the lower Georgia Avenue area, home of Howard's central campus.  In early November, two current Howard students, Maya Katherine Moore and Silas Wood, and one alum, Curry Hackett, were featured in this video art project where they expressed their views on the changes that are occurring in the Pleasant Plains and Park View neighborhoods around Howard.  Philippa Hughes of the Pink Line Project was the creative force behind the project.  She and her team projected the faces of area residents and students onto the walls and in storefronts along Georgia Avenue to highlight the community's diversity and encourage neighbors to truly see one another.   Visit the website: SeeChangedc.com  to view selected interviews and scenes from the community.

COMMUNITY APPRECIATION DAY AT HUH

Howard University Hospital and the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees (NUHHCE),  Metropolitan District 1199, AFSCME, AFL-CIO sponsored a community appreciation day on the front lawn of the hospital on Saturday, September 24, 2016.  The community was invited to come learn about the hospital's offerings, get health screenings and enjoy family fun and refreshments.  This was also a time to celebrate the mutually beneficial working relationship between hospital management and the union workers.

WALKING TOUR OF THE "U"  STREET EAST AREA

On October 29, 2016, Maybelle Taylor Bennett, Director of the Howard University Community Association, joined Aimee Custis and Claire Jaffee of the Coalition for Smarter Growth, as a guide for one of the Coalition's walking tours.  The tour was intended to showcase the neighborhood's many current and impending changes, its proximity to excellent transit facilities and its walkability.  Highlighted were the new housing developments, art studios on Eighth Street, recently opened restaurants and the Landmark movie theater. The tour began at the African American Civil War Memorial and ended at Howard and its development partners' new mixed use apartment and retail project being constructed across from the West Howard Plaza Towers.  Other guides on the tour were Commissioner Robb Hudson, Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC) for ANC 1B11, Emily Garofalo and Lauren Greco with the JBG Companies, Kevin Shaar, with MRP Realty, and Patrick Nelson, a Chair of the ANC 1B Zoning, Preservation and Development Committee.
