ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK 2017
For more than twenty years, Howard University’s Alternative Spring Break program has been committed to serving communities in need and involving students in meaningful service. "ASB" connects students to the significance of their education and prepares them to be servant leaders for the nation and the world.

Every year, ASB works in partnership with cities across the United States to provide service projects that incorporate physical labor, civic education and practical responses to the most prevalent disparities in our partner cities.

This year marked a groundbreaking expansion for the program.  ASB grew to include 13 distinct sites by expanding to Dilley, Texas; Lumberton, North Carolina and Cape Coast, Ghana. There were over 500 participants, over 130,000 hours of service and over 90 community partnerships this year! For more information, photos and highlights, visit www.huasb.com.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT INITIATIVES

The Office of Off-Campus Housing and Community Engagement (OCHCE) has been involved in many efforts to support and serve the community this semester.

LEDROIT PARK HEALTH FAIR - On Wednesday, March 29, the Office of Off-Campus Housing and Community Engagement (OCHCE), the Howard University Community Association (HUCA), and the Howard University Hospital (HUH) held the third Health Fair at the LeDroit Park Seniors Apartment. As part of the University Sesquicentennial celebration, LeDroit Park residents attended and participated in the numerous health screenings and health education information sessions. Residents were offered blood pressure, glucose, dental and ophthalmology screenings. The information sessions focused on health related issues such as hypertension, diabetes, dental, and other education information for the senior population at LeDroit Park Senior Apartments.  Residents were provided with healthy snacks and Panera Bread treats from the Yahweh Outreach International Program.

STUDENT CARE PACKAGES - The Office of Off-Campus Housing and Community Engagement (OCHCE), and The Raney Moss Foundation with the support of Booz Allen have prepared over a hundred care packages for Howard students in need!

The care package project focused on students whose parents were unable to afford sending their children care packages with necessities such as school supplies, toiletries and food. On Wednesday, March 22, OCHCE attended The Raney Moss Foundation care package stuffing party at Booz Allen and prepared over 100+ care packages for our students in need. Care packages--comfort bags will be distributed to students in need just prior to their final examination period.

OCHCE HOUSING FAIR - OCHCE held its 2017 Housing Fair on Wednesday, April 5 in the Armour J. Blackburn Center. The numerous students, staff, faculty and community members in attendance made the event a tremendous success. Private homeowners were invited to participate and over 20 give-away prizes were awarded to students, staff, faculty, and community members.

HOWARD UNIVERSITY STRIVES FOR A TOP-TIER ORGANIC FARM PROGRAM- The Organic Urban Farm aims to provide direct access to quality, fresh produce for students and the surrounding D.C. community. In an effort to encourage ecological balance by reducing the carbon footprint and fostering a sustainable, nutritional lifestyle, students have united to create a farm with financial and agricultural independence. Howard University is striving to be a top-tier program that is research-based, innovative, creative and student-driven with experiential learning in Business and Agricultural Sustainable Farming. The new garden will begin its blossoming reigns next to the West Towers.

Join us in the Blackburn Digital Auditorium for a free Movie Night! This event is open to the public. All are welcome!
