Mayor Bowser Announces Summer Initiatives for DC Youth

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser was joined by District officials to highlight programming available to DC families and youth throughout the summer months. Each year, the DC Government provides a range of resources and programs to keep youth engaged, active, and safe, and with the end of the school year nearing, the Bowser Administration is making a push to ensure all families are aware of the resources available.  

“In order to keep our youngest residents safe, healthy and learning, my Administration has worked to provide a wide variety of camps, programs, and activities for youth across the city,” said Mayor Bowser. “By collaborating across agencies and looking for new ways to engage families and young residents, we are ensuring that more children and teens have access to engaging and meaningful activities throughout the summer.”

The Mayor also highlighted the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) summer crime initiative which seeks to incorporate strategic prevention and focused enforcement in an effort to reduce the incidence of violent crimes during the summer months.

Department of Parks and Recreation Summer Camps and Programs

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) began registration for their summer camps earlier this year, and registration opportunities still remain for some summer camps. Information about available camps can be found HERE. DPR has also opened registration for summer programs, including fitness classes and art lessons, and a program listing and more information is available HERE.

DC Public Schools Summer Learning Progams

The District of Columbia Public Schools continues to offer summer learning programs for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Summer Learning Program participants will meet Monday through Friday, June 26 through July 28, 2017. Grades K-8 will convene from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., and grades 9-12 will convene from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Families can learn more and register HERE.

Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, Safer Stronger DC Community Partnerships

The mission of the Safer Stronger DC Community Partnerships (SSDCCP) Office is to foster a community-oriented model to violence prevention and public safety. SSDCCP’s violence prevention strategy is rooted in a public health approach, recognizing that reducing crime is not accomplished solely through law enforcement. Throughout the summer, SSDCCP emphasizes community outreach and support, community stabilization, community building, and economic opportunity.

Metropolitan Police Department

Each of the past nine summers, MPD has identified five to six focus areas that have experienced a high density of violent crime. Throughout the summer months, MPD then focuses all available resources, utilizes the latest crime-fighting technology, and calls upon partner agencies and organizations to assist in a coordinated effort to reduce violent crime in these areas. This year, MPD’s Summer Crime Prevention Initiative will focus on reducing violent crime, removing illegal guns from our neighborhood streets, and holding repeat violent offenders accountable.

In addition, MPD will continue to host events like National Night Out, Beat the Streets, and community bike rides.
