Good morning Commissioner Norman and thank you for your email.  I am including your sector captain and lieutenants in this response.  While they are certainly very concerning, both of these incidents are fortunately unrelated to each other.

At approximately 5:15am this morning, MPD was dispatched to multiple calls for the sounds of gunshots in the area of 2000 4th Street/400 Elm Street NW.  Responding units located multiple shell casings in the street, but no reported victims or property damage at this time.  We checked area hospitals and no victims were reported.  Due to the early hour, we have not located any witnesses who observed the actual shooter, but we will continue to investigate and encourage anyone who may have observed the incident to contact us.

We are very concerned regarding this incident, specifically because of the early morning and high number of shots fired/shell casings.  This is certainly alarming and unacceptable in our community. We continue to encourage members of the community to take part in the mayor’s camera rebate program, as we have found video to be helpful in many cases.  

As for the incident yesterday, at approximately 4:30pm, officers on patrol on 7th Street observed a subject driving a car and being involved in a motor vehicle accident.  The driver of the striking vehicle pulled away from the scene and drove to the 600 block of Florida avenue where his car broke down.  He then exited the vehicle, running on foot toward 5th and U Streets where he attempted to hide in a back yard from MPD.  He was located, placed under arrest, and charged with traffic violations, fleeing, as well as narcotics charges (he was in possession of illegal drugs).  The suspect in this case lives in the Parkview area, so he may have been attempting to get toward that location by going through LeDroit.

These include the heavy police presence from MPD yesterday evening in the 400 block of Elm St. N.W. and the residents' reporting of gunfire that was heard around the 2000 block of 4th st. and V st. between 5:00 am to 5:30 am this morning. Yesterday when I contacted 3D police station, an officer informed me that MPD was looking for a suspect that had fled into LeDroit Park. Could you apprise me of these two events and clarify any information so that I can respond to the inquiries of my constituents in my SMD that includes LeDroit Park.
