View this email in your browser Neighbors, I am excited to share that 10 of our best and brightest youth recently received national recognition as co-authors of a new book, "The Day Tajon Got Shot." These remarkable young women, all between the ages of 11 and 13 when they began writing the book, received the Gold INDIES Award in the category of Child Authors (under 17). Their work on the book began in March of 2015, through a teen writing program developed by Beacon House, an after-school education and youth development nonprofit in the Edgewood community of Ward 5.  The 10 teen authors launched their book in March 2017 and since then have received local and national recognition. Beacon House’s ten teen authors were inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and for two years, they met on Friday afternoons to brainstorm, write, review, and edit their work. They began with one central question: What really happens in a community when a black youth is the victim of violence by police? These brilliant young ladies have represented their families, Beacon House, Ward 5, and the District of Columbia well. I would like to congratulate T'Asia Bates, J'yona Calloway, Reiyanna Davis, Jonae Haynesworth, Makiya Holmes, Rose McKoy, Najae Purvis, Serenity Summers, Jeanet Teneyck, and Temil Whipple on their well-deserved recognition and look forward to following them as they continue to succeed in their future endeavors. In Service, Kenyan In this issue of the Ward 5 Report: Kenyan in the Community 5th District Safe Summer Kickoff - Friday, June 29 Trash & Recycling Collections to Begin at 6:00 am Throughout Summer Kenyan in the Community 5th District Safe Summer Kickoff - Friday, June 29 Metropolitan Police Department 5th District Community Outreach Unit, in collaboration with Paul Winestock of Saving Our Next Generation, presents a Safe Summer Kickoff. Come and enjoy free food, music from MPD’s Side By Side Band, moon bounce for the youth, employment vendors, and an opportunity to ask questions of law enforcement. DATE: Friday, June 29, 2018 TIME: Noon - 4:00 pm LOCATION: 1311 Rhode Island Avenue NE Trash & Recycling Collections to Begin at 6:00 am Throughout Summer Summer has arrived in the District and so has the hot weather. With this in mind, trash and recycling crews from the Department of Public Works (DPW) will be starting their daily collection routes one hour earlier at 6 am. The earlier collection time will remain in effect for the entire summer, ending Friday, August 31. With summer temperatures often climbing above 90°, DPW wants to give their crews the ability to start a little earlier in the day when it’s cooler. By starting collections earlier throughout the full summer, our goal is to make things simpler for the residents we serve. To make sure trash and recycling are out for pick-up at the earlier time, DPW’s customers can put their items out starting at 6:30 pm the day before their collections are to be made. Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day or a sanitation citation may be issued. Residents are also advised to write or paint your address (including street name and number) on at least two sides of your containers using a bold, bright color that attracts attention and distinguishes your containers from your neighbors' containers. This helps prevent theft and ensures that your get your correct cans back after pickup.
