FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“I’m Gonna Get You..: Body, Woman and Rupture” -  “Si te cojo…: Cuerpo, mujer y rotura”

WASHINGTON DC – September 30, 2018.  Award-winning artist Marta Pérez García announced today that her new installation against gender-based violence entitled “I’m Gonna Get You..: Body, Woman and Rupture” - “Si te cojo…: Cuerpo, mujer y rotura”will open on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Reeves Building in Central Washington D.C. (14thstreet and U street NW).

The giant -30ft x 24ft- immersive installation featuring over 160 artworks was awarded the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities 2018Public Art Building Communities Grant, and took a year to complete.

Marta Pérez García is a Puerto-Rico born and DC-based artist who is known for her powerful and colorful prints and paintings. This installation, unique by its size, content and process will open the month against domestic violence in Washington DC.

“Large swaths of contemporary societies continue to disregard the overwhelming problem of gender-based violence. Through this multi-media immersive installation, I want to stimulate a reflection within the community on how gender-based violence has become an integral part of society. Without using melodrama, simplifications or moralization, I aim to create an aesthetic space that sheds light on how gender-based violence particularly targeted at women has become an accepted part of life, a never-ending feminicide” says Pérez García.

This installation intends to be a call to action so that through art the community goes from being a silent witness to becoming an active healer. The aesthetic space thus created is intended to give a voice to women who have lived and continue to live in silence with these acts of horror.

The Installation is located inside the Reeves Municipal building, in the large atrium. Pérez García wanted this installation to be hosted in a municipal building, where the public meets the communal institutions as a symbol of the many facets of the problem, and of the need to tackle the problem from all angles.  The Reeves Municipal building is located at 2000 14thStreet NW, Washington DC 20003. The building is open to the public daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
