Subject: [LeDroitPark] Shooting in 200 block of V St NW

Good afternoon --

MPD is currently investigating a shooting that occurred this morning on the 200 block of V Street, NW. An adult victim was shot in the leg and is receiving medical attention. A second victim was located at an area hospital. Both are in stable condition.

I have spoken with Commander Emerman about this being one of several violent incidents recently in this area. The Commander shares my particular concern about how there have been an increase in early morning/daytime shootings. MPD has increased their visibility in the area after recent events. The Commander reports that an MPD officer was in the park today talking to neighbors when the shooting took place. The officer immediately advised an MPD dispatcher and proceeded to broadcast lookout information to responding units. He had a marked police vehicle parked on Elm Street and was in full uniform. They will continue increased deployments in the area.

Any gun violence is not acceptable, which is why the Chief of Police has made it a priority for the department to get as many illegal firearms off the street as we can. When firearms enter the mix, a simple dispute between individuals can become deadly. Council is also working to reduce gun violence. Just this week, Council passed gun violence prevention legislation including a “red flag” gun law I wrote that gives residents and police new tools to temporarily remove guns when someone is a risk to themselves or others. Similar laws in other states are already saving lives.

When shootings do occur MPD detectives examine evidence and work with the community to make arrests as quickly as possible. Video is especially helpful for their efforts. Commander Emerman shared that existing security cameras at places such as Kelly Miller/LeDroit apartments and Howard University cameras are helpful, in addition to cameras on private residences. If you live near the park and/or the 200 block of V St NW and have a private security camera that faces the street, please contact MPD at 202-727-9099. The Commander and I both encourage residents to participate in DC’s Private Security Camera Incentive Program: follow this link to find out more

This incident occurred in Police Service Area 306. Police Service Areas (PSAs) are how MPD divides up its Police Districts (Ward 1 is part of Districts 3 and 4). PSAs regularly meet to engage with the community on issues of public safety. You can stay updated on developments in the 3rd Police District and learn about upcoming PSA meetings by subscribing to the official MPD listserv for the area.

Sincerely,
