Ward 5 Report: Uplifting our community through action

Neighbors,

When we come together to uplift our community, we, through action, demonstrate love for our city. More importantly, we communicate our enduring commitment to the health and safety of District residents. During a time in the District when our youngest residents are confronted with the realities of a rapidly changing city and traumatized by the presence of violence, unified civic engagement is critical.

On March 9th I assisted the Carver Terrace community with a pre-spring cleanup on M Street NE. This effort was successful because of the government agencies and, most importantly, the residents who readily participated. Over the years, I have also joined with different neighbors to walk through the community and identify how we can improve it. Yesterday, neighbors demonstrated a commitment to the community as dozens of residents joined me for a walkthrough. This type of civic engagement sets a high expectation of residents, District agencies, and elected officials. Although a community clean up or walkthrough may appear to be an insignificant undertaking, the impact of these activities has a tremendously positive influence on young people. Our actions and investment in necessary resources demonstrate that we are dedicated to the health and safety of our young people and our community at large. Together we can change our communities and make our voices heard. I am calling on us all to continue to unify and work together to bring about the change we want to see.

In service,

Kenyan
