See this update on the Bloomingdale Village Square initiative:
More than a year ago, BCA's
Bloomingdale Village Square (BVS) Initiative received a grant from
HumanitiesDC (an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities) to
develop and implement a project, Taking Village History to Our
Youth. This project is a youth leadership development effort
that is rooted in neighborhood history and youth issues occasioned by
changing neighborhoods and gentrification. The project is targeted to
youth in grades 7 - 12.
We have posted
the project's PROMOTIONAL PORTFOLIO at the BVS website: www.bloomingdalecivicassociation.org/villagecenter
The Portfolio describes the project's curriculum in detail
and includes three of its lesson plans.
We have completed development
of the curriculum's 10 structured classroom lessons plans and 10 Community
Exploratory Expeditions (CEEs aka field trips). The lessons are amenable
to flexibility both in the time expended in their presentation to students, as
well as their format (in class, after-school, Saturday program and/or
virtual). We also have completed development of a 75-page Teacher
Curriculum Guide, a 56-page Student Curriculum Guide, and a packet
of teaching/learning resources (e.g., videos, articles, worksheets and other
handouts, and other types of resources including all booklets & brochures
previously developed by BVS).
In consideration of the
impact of Covid-19, we have initiated uploading all curriculum materials
onto the Google + Education platform for virtual teaching/learning
use. We also are developing brief instructional videos on navigation
of the Google platform site. Teachers will also be provided at least 3
hours of training on the curriculum and use of the Teacher Guide. We
are hoping that we might be able to implement the curriculum in January 2021.
We also are actively
recruiting:
- Program sites (schools,
community-based organizations willing to host in-class, after-school or
Saturday programs);
- Volunteers to
serve as teachers, facilitators (assistant teachers), chaperones/expedition leaders for
CEEs and guest lecturers on curriculum topics . Parents
and other adults, as well as advanced college and graduate students
seeking academic credit for practicum/internship/community service
experiences will be considered.
- Potential funders to
underwrite limited project operational costs (e.g., school supplies,
snacks and transportation to CEEs, student participant project t-shirts,
etc.)
Please take a look at
the Promotional Portfolio, and if your interest is piqued, and you want
