Please be
aware of the traffic pattern change on First Street NW.
* Between Thomas Street NW and Rhode Island Avenue NW, traffic on
First Street is southbound only.

NW has been shifted to the northbound lane.

Last week,
DC Water’s contractor began removing jet grout lines from First
Street NW. Work is estimated to be completed by the end of this
week. During this work southbound traffic on First Street, NW will
be temporarily shifted to the northbound side and remain a single
lane until jet grout lines are removed and the road repaired.
Reopening of First Street NW north and southbound is estimated in 2
weeks. All dates and work schedules are subject to change due to
weather.
At the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue NW and First
Street NW barrels are in place and signs warn that the road is
closed. Use the detour. Travel and parking restrictions will remain
in place on Rhode Island Avenue NW towards the T Street NW Construction
Site.

Travel and
Parking Restrictions
- Southbound
traffic on First Street, NW has been shifted to the northbound
lane.
- Travel lanes in
each direction of Rhode Island Avenue NW between First Street,
NW and Florida Avenue, NW will continue to be reduced to two
lanes.
- Parking
restrictions will be in place on each side of Rhode Island
Avenue, NW between First Street, NW and Second Street, NW.

Temporary
Pedestrian Detour
- The detour will
direct pedestrians to the crosswalks at the west side
intersection of First Street NW and Rhode Island Avenue NW.
- The First Street
crosswalk at Rhode Island Avenue NW will be closed.
- Use the crosswalk
at Thomas Street NW for First Street.

Additional
Information
- People who live or
work near the affected locations will notice additional
construction equipment and personnel as well as noise
associated with construction activities.
- Commuters and
pedestrians will notice road signs and/or flagging personnel
directing them safely around the work site.
- Pedestrians will
notice signage for the closed sidewalk restricting access.

Project
Details
The Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) is the largest component of
the Clean Rivers Project. It begins south of RFK Stadium and will
extend north to Rhode Island Avenue NE and west to 6th Street NW.
Once the NEBT is connected to the other Clean Rivers tunnels,
combined sewer overflows to the Anacostia River will be
reduced by 98 percent. In addition to controlling combined sewer overflows,
the construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel will reduce the
chance of flooding in the areas it serves from approximately 50 to
7 percent in any given year.
