an Episcopal Church for African Americans. St. George's
witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as expressed through the
Anglican Tradition. We serve as a guiding light for our
parishioners as well as the larger community. We bid

God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made
all things. Bless those fathers who have taken upon themselves,
the responsibility of parenting. Bless those who have lost a
spouse to death ... or divorce who are parenting their children
alone. Strengthen them by your love that they may be and become
the loving, caring persons they are meant to be. Grant this
through Christ our Lord. Amen

June 1865
June 19 marks the anniversary of the day in 1865
when Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and his troops arrived in
Galveston, Texas, and announced to slaves there that they had
been freed. The Emancipation Proclamation issued by President
Abraham Lincoln had taken effect on Jan. 1, 1863, but the order
had little effect in the parts of the South still controlled by
the Confederacy during the Civil War. And even though the war
ended in April 1865, former slaves in Texas didn’t receive news
that they were free until two months later.
One of General Granger’s first orders of business
was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3 which
began most significantly with:
"The people of Texas are informed that in
accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United
States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality
of rights and rights of property between former masters and
slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them
becomes that between employer and hired laborer."
From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the
observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day
has spread across the United States and beyond.
Today Juneteenth commemorates African American
freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a time
for assessment, self-improvement, and for planning the future.

St. George’s Summer Bible Study
This summer St. George’s will be
offering two Summer Modules. Each module is 3-weeks in duration;
and engage topics that are relevant for this moment in our life
together. While these modules are not exhaustive, they do provide
an opportunity for us to engage a good conversation that will
hopefully generate additional and exciting inquiries of study.

Regathering News
Outdoor 7:30 Service: On Sunday, June 6, 2021 we will begin to
hold an outdoor Eucharist on the Conversation Court. We
will continue to wear masks and maintain social distancing. All
are welcome.
Indoor Regathering: We are working with St. Luke's and Calvary to
provide a date when we will regather in person. As you know we
have grown into a shared community and we are prayerfully
discerning how we continue in together in community even as we
plan in the near future to worship in our own spaces.

T. Walker School for Boys
Juneteenth
Giving Campaign
This first ever BWS Juneteenth campaign was
conceptualized as an opportunity to raise awareness of our School
and the imperative role we play in shifting the educational
narrative and experience of boys living East of the Anacostia
River in Southeast DC.
Increasing calls for investment in Black
communities have been amplified during Juneteenth in response to
what appears to be a mass racial awakening, and the Bishop Walker
School sees its mission and work as a shining example of what can
be done to lay a firm foundation in the lives of our next
generation of Black male leaders. The Bishop Walker School is an
Episcopal school which strives to ignite in boys a love for
learning and a commitment to serve others in an intellectually
rich and socially engaging environment.

St. George's Oral History Project
We are excited to announce that
our Congregational Leadership Initiative (CLI) through the
Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) - St. George's Oral History -
has received a $7,000 grant from the DC Humanities Council. We will
be working hard over the next five months to conduct an oral
history that is done right and done well in order to preserve our
history contributing to our legacy.

Racial
Justice Audit of Episcopal Leadership
As you may have seen, the
Episcopal Church recently released a racial justice audit of
Episcopal leadership:

This is a watershed study that
will likely impact how the Church sets priorities as we continue
to dismantle racism and pursue justice and healing. I encourage
us to become familiar with the findings which will also help
congregations and the Church look at ourselves and set priorities
for action. There is a series of informational webinars being
offered by The Episcopal Church, the first one being Tuesday
evening and then two more in the month of June. Feel free to
share this more widely.

Serving the Community

|
Kwanzaa Kitchen: Janis has
been able to come up with a unique way in which we will continue
to feed the hungry in this important ministry. It involves fewer
than 6 people and we will pack the food to go and place it
outside on tables for people to take their breakfast with them.
We will continue this way until we are able to gather groups
together again.
