Bloomingdale Farmers Market: Don't cook recipes and tomato sale at Garner's Produce -- Sunday, 07-24-2022

Subject: Don't Cook Recipes and Tomato Sale BFM

Hi BFM Fans!

Come early - beat the heat- it is nice at 9 and 10 and 11.

Tomatoes. Sale. Garner's running their box sale early this year. 25 pounds/$20.  That is an incredible price for good seconds that are perfect for canning, saucing, gazpachoing, slow roasting and then freezing for the winter.  I do several boxes of slow roasted tomatoes every year and they take up remarkably little room in my freezer. Make tomato pies, tomato granita, dehydrate tomatoes, make sun dried tomatoes.

Call: include your name and market pickup

What to eat with the temp gets to 98? Pretend you are in Provence:

  • Melon. Nice chilled melons: canary, honeydew, cantaloupe, sugar cubes and watermelons of all shapes, sizs and colors.  I can make a meal of half a melon that I have chilled for an hour in the fridge. I can also go Italian and wrap slices in Prosciutto.
  • Robin's Gazpacho: Start with a thick, stale slice of good bread. (Or toast a fresh slice) Shred it and soak it in water until soft. Throw it in the blender or food processor with two cloves of garlic, a glug of olive oil and a dash of Sherry vinegar.  Blend until it looks like brown mayonnaise. Add a small red onion or large shallot, peeled and chopped and blend. Add a seeded cucumber, chopped and blend. Add a red pepper, seeded and chopped and blend.  Now for the tomatoes. Chop and salt them, let them sit in a bowl for 5 minutes until the juices start to run and then add them to the blender or processor and processor until very very smooth.  Taste. Adjust the seasoning. It may need additional salt, a teaspoon of sherry vinegar and even another glug of olive oil.  Then pour into a pitcher or container and cool in the fridge for several hour or overnight.  Retaste before serving; it may need a dash more vinegar. You want sweet tomato flavor to be balanced by acidity of the sherry vinegar and a bit of salt.  It should not taste acidic.  I love to serve gazpacho in interesting glasses topped with cubed melon.
  • Salads: Tomatoes and cucumbers and feta cheese with or without olives are very satisfying with a good olive oil and vinegar/lemon.
  • Boil up a couple of pounds of green beans to keep in the fridge as a salad base. Great with small steamed potatoes, tuna, capers, olives. Or Green Bean and Tofu Salad with Peanut dressing.
  •
  • Stone Fruit Caprese since it is also stone fruit season.
  • and 5 salads for hot  hot days: Corn Salad with Tomatoes, Basil and Cilantro, Tuna Salad with Hot and Sweet Peppers, Pasta Salad with Cherry Tomatoes, salami and mozz, Chicken and Herb Salad with Nuoc Cham
  • Kohlrabi Slaw: 2 bulbs kohlrabi grated, 4 carrots grated, 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons Cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon mustard, 1/2 tablespoon kosher salt. Freshly ground pepper.  Mix well.  Thanks, Shenandoah for this excellent recipe.

Subject: Penne with Toms, Basil & Tahini: BFM Sunday

Hi BFM Fans!

New this week : melons at Garner, new fruits at Reid, new Dumplings, Bao, Congee, handmade wheat or rice noodles at Chinese Street Market

We are open rain or shine Sunday--

Tomatoes.  Now that we are in tomato season, the question is: how best to store them. I have always belonged to the never refrigerate tomatoes team but lots of people researching this say that perfectly ripe tomatoes -- the ones that smell tomatoey and are soft and ready to eat can go into the fridge for a day or so without harm.   So keep them on a counter at room temperature until they are really really ripe and by then, you may not have eaten them all up. Read here and here.

Penne with Tomatoes and Basil and Tahini?  Yes. The tahini adds a buttery, nutty, creamy flavor so you do not miss the   pine nuts or the parmesan.   Try it.

investigative journalist Andy Kroll's upcoming book titled A Death on W Street about the murder of Seth Rich

See this 07/11/2022 message from Andy Kroll:

Andy Kroll is an investigative journalist who's lived and worked in Washington since 2010. He spent five years working on A Death on W Street, his upcoming book about the murder of Seth Rich, the conspiracy theorists and partisan operatives who exploited that tragedy, and the Rich family's pursuit of justice against Fox News.

Seth's parents and his brother granted Andy unprecedented access for the book, sitting for dozens of hours of interviews, sharing private writings and correspondence, and introducing Andy to Seth's closest friends and colleagues. The book also includes revelations and new information about the police investigation, the explosion of the conspiracy theories, and how far up those theories reached in the federal government during the Trump presidency.

The Rich story began as a personal one for Andy. He and Seth both moved to DC around the same time, ran in similar social circles, and even played on the same District Sports soccer team at Cardozo High. Andy went on to cover Seth's story for Rolling Stone magazine, where he spent four years as DC bureau chief. What compelled Andy to write a book about it was the realization that Seth's killing, the lack of answers about who did it, and the howling mob that filled that void captured something larger about the trajectory of American life in recent years — and where we might be headed next. As Andy writes in the book, Seth and his family's story is "a skeleton key to the past half-decade in America, unlocking so much about how this country ended up at this strange point in our history."

The story told in A Death on W Street will of course hit close to home for Bloomingdale residents, and indeed Andy interviewed Mark Mueller and, yes, the Bloomingdale blog's very own Scott Roberts during his reporting, to name only a few. Yet it's a story that's both local and global, moving from the leafy streets of Bloomingdale to Julian Assange's London exile, from the halls of the Trump White House to the studios of Fox News.

The book comes out on Sept. 6. You can preorder it now. Andy is planning to do readings in DC this fall as well. He's reachable anytime via www (dot) andykroll (dot) com.

Bloomingdale Farmers Market: Berry good market Sunday, 07-10-2022

From: Robin Shuster
Sent: Sunday, July 10, 2022 3:49 AM

Subject: BFM: Berry Good Market Sunday

 Hi BFM Fans!

A wonderful summer salad - potatoes and green beans -- that I have been making here in Provence for decades and just discovered that José Andrés mother used to make it for him in Barcelona.

He simmers fingerling potatoes in salted water for 8 minutes and then adds the green beans another 5 minutes, drains them and pours over oil garlic oil. Separately, lightly brown garlic cloves in olive oil over medium to low heat, with 1/2 tsp of pimento and salt.  Toss the vegetables with the oil, drizzle with sherry vinegar and serve.

This is almost exactly the same way I make this dish except I have always cooked the potatoes and green beans separately.  I am trying his method Saturday for lunch.  You can vary the potatoes and the beans - use green or yellow or flat romano.  The flat romanos will take longer but cook them until tender. I have been getting both the skinny French Haricots Verts and the thicker ones that look like ours.

SHENANDOAH SEASONAL: Tomatoes!  The summer crops are in: 6 varieties of eggplant, beans, cabbage (green and purple), radicchio, beets (red and golden), squash mix, rainbow chard, Kale (curly and Dino), pea shoots, cukes, kohlrabi (green and purple), onios, scallions, dandelion greens, baby gem lettuce, sage, Italian flat leafed parsley, onions and scallions.  Organic.

GARNER's PRODUCE: Bicolor Sweet Corn! Blueberries! blackberries, sugar snap peas, shelled peas, high tunnel tomatoes: heirloom, cherry, early girl, green beans, kales bunches - red, green, Tuscano, sorrel. red, white and yellow new potatoes, yellow, golden and green squash, pale green Ishtar, eggplant (black, striped, barbarella, white, Large Italian, long Japanese neon. beets, fennel, round, Savoy, Napa cabbage, green and purple and sweet banana peppers.  Fresno, poblanos, jalapenos. sweet candy onion, radishes, Swiss chard, collard greens, cukes, lettuces - romaine and salonova heads.  Elephant Garlic, Parsley. Rosemary. Chives. Lavender. Mint. Basil, Cilantro. Dill. Stoneground Grits and Stoneground Cornmeal. Squash blossoms, Basil.

WHISKED: Andre says: Did you know July 12 is NATIONAL PECAN PIE DAY? Well, it is.
