So, what are you having at your cookout or picnic or July 4th meal?

I say you have to have pickles and condiments and hot sauces. Number 1 Sons has the FULL lineup of cucumbers and kimchi...hint hint. Chinese Market has three kinds of chili condiments.

Try the new Bread & Butter Pickle at Number 1 Sons. Here is the inside story from Stephanie:  "As you've probably seen, for years we’ve been playing around with a classic bread & butter style pickle and we think we’ve finally made our ideal (non-spicy) version. Speared cucumbers are pickled in a lightly sweet brown sugar brine with carrots, celery and red onion and lots of pickling spice and celery seed"

How about a Creamy Dill Cucumber Salad

Red, White and Blue berries/fruits? I often start with that to get into the July 4 mood.  If you into a baking mood, make a blueberry fruit galette from my friend Cathy Barrow, the queen of pies.  If you don't feel like baking your own, get a wonderful pie from Whisked. (They started their bakery at our market).

 Can you have a July 4 meal without sweet corn? (Not in my family, you cannot). Lucky for us, Garner Produce starts their corn plantings early so that we always have some corn for you. I will post lots of different corn recipes all summer but this week I would just simmer or grill it and swipe the ear in good butter with salt and pepper.  Or if you want something a bit different:  I love to slick the corn with mayo, sprinkle it with hot smoked paprika, salt and pepper and finally drizzle on some lime.

Boeuf Bourguignon, Chicken and Veggie Soup, Italian Wedding Soup, Beef and Chicken Enchiladas, Beef Chili, Chicken Pot Pie, Beef Shepherd's Pie.

SHENANDOAH SEASONAL:  The summer crops are in: eggplant, squash and zucchini, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, shishito peppers, basil, parsley, plus peashoots, salad mix, radicchio, fennel, chard, kohlrabi, kales, cabbages, fresh onions.

Besides, what's more American than Apple Pie> Umm, maybe Cherry Pie or Strawberry Rhubarb?  Each of Whisked Pies are the perfect accompaniment to a picnic or cookout or party.  If an ICE CREAM SANDWICH is your thing, use their cookies to construct a cool down treat.  Also look at Pies: Apple Crumble, Bourbon Pecan, Sea Salt Chocolate Chess, Salted Caramel Apple, Cherry. Perfect fast food as it should be.

CHINESE STREET MARKET; Wonderful Sichuan dumplings for omnivores and vegetarians, noodles, noodle soup kits, three kinds of chili condiments.  A really local success story.  Keep them in your freezer and you can serve a very special meal in just a few minutes. Use the chili oil and mala dry chili seasoning to spice up your barbecues and stir fries.
