Howard University’s 151st Commencement
Convocation
|
|
The
university's official graduation ceremony
will confer more than 2,000 degrees, including 282
master’s degrees and 114 Ph.Ds. to all prospective graduates
from 13 schools and colleges.
The
event takes place on
Saturday,
May 11 at 10 a.m.

Howard University Alumnus Kasim Reed To Deliver
2019 Commencement Address
|
|
Howard University President, Dr.
Wayne A. I. Frederick, has
announced that alumnus and former mayor of Atlanta, the Honorable Kasim
Reed, will deliver the keynote address during Howard University’s
151st Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 11,
2019. Reed will address members of the Class of 2019
and their families, University trustees, officers, faculty,
staff, and alumni. Howard University will confer upon Reed
the Presidential Medal of Achievement.
“The Howard University community
is delighted to welcome back home alumnus and trustee emeritus,
Kasim Reed, to deliver the 2019 commencement address,”
said Howard University President, Dr. Wayne A. I.
Frederick. “His body of work in a life dedicated to public
service and commitment to higher education exudes our motto of
truth and service.”
"Returning to Howard always
feels like coming home to me. I am deeply honored to serve as the
commencement speaker for the Howard University Class of 2019,”
said Reed. “No source, with the exception of my family
and my faith, have played a more important role in any success
that I have had in my career than Howard University. I
look forward to addressing this year's graduates as they prepare
to take their place as leaders in America and the global
community."
Reed is an American attorney and
politician who served two terms as the 59th mayor of the city of
Atlanta from 2010 to 2018. Reed is a graduate and proud alumnus
of Howard University where he received his Bachelor of Arts and
Juris Doctor degrees and an honorary Doctor of Law. As an
undergraduate member of Howard University's Board of Trustees, he
created a fundraising program entitled The Independence
Initiative that has contributed more than $12 million to the
University’s endowment since its inception. Reed
became the institution’s youngest general trustee in June 2002
and remains a dedicated trustee emeritus. |

parking permit will be required. Parking will be on a first come
first served basis and is at no charge.

ADA Accommodations
Guests who have not secured an
ADA parking permit, through the Office of Special Student
Services, will only be allowed to drop off guests at Georgia
Avenue NW & Fairmont Street NW or Howard Place NW
and 6th Street NW.
Commencement Shuttle Service
Complimentary shuttle service
will be provided on Saturday, May 11th, every 15-25 minutes from
7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and again from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. from the
following parking lots:

HUH Garages – 4th & V St. NW
·
Shaw/Howard Metro Station
From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., the
shuttles will start at Georgia Avenue NW & Fairmont St. NW to
shuttle guests back to the aforementioned parking lots.

From Wednesday, May 8 – Friday,
May 10, 2019, graduates and their guests can park on the
following lots at no charge. Please be reminded that illegally
parked vehicles will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s
expense.

The Howard University Department
of Public Safety is concerned about the safety of you, your
friends and family during this busy graduation period. We are
offering some tips to stay safe while enjoying the 2019
graduation ceremonies!
· Know your environment and
become aware of your surroundings.
· Travel in a group with trusted
friends and designate a specific meeting place and time to meet
back up should the group split up.
· Always locate your nearest
exits.
· Wear comfortable shoes and
clothing.
· Pay attention to
street/parking signs when parking cars and secure your car
keys.
· Keep personal items including
credit cards on your person to a minimum.
· Secure cell phones and other
electronic devices when not in use.
· Don’t leave anything visible in
the passenger area of vehicles. Secure items in the trunk of
your car, do this discreetly, out of the view of passersby.
· If you see, hear or smell
something….…SAY SOMETHING!

| HU EAST OF THE RIVER |
Ready to Learn Camp
WHUT
launched its inaugural Ready to Learn Camp during
the District's school calendar spring break at
the Bald Eagle Recreation Center located within the
Bellevue Community in Ward 8. The
station recruited a total of 12
enthusiastic campers and
provided two innovative facilitators for
the week-long learning session inspired by the
PBS Odd Squad live action television series.
Each day began with a light breakfast
with our
young agents, followed by a creative video
that detailed the specific mission of
each case. Campers learned about critical
thinking, science, and the importance of teamwork. On
the final day of camp, WHUT, in conjunction with
the Bald Eagle staff, held an official
badge ceremony and provided each
participant with a Certificate of Achievement
along with a WHUT/PBS gift bag filled with amazing
educational resources and materials.
In addition, the campers received
in-person support from the captain, officers and
investigators representing the 7th District Police Precinct that
offered congratulatory remarks along with words of
encouragement to each participant. Metropolitan Police
officers engaged the youth in dialogue about the importance
of making right decisions, and using problem solving techniques
on a long-term basis.
Lastly, Howard University's partners at ConnectDC,
on behalf of the District's Office of Chief Technology
Officer, provided their support
by transporting their technology mobile equipped
with over 10 computers unit to engage campers,
along with community members, in learning about the
unlimited benefits of technology and effective ways to
utilize it outside of the traditional classroom space and
within the Bellevue community. |

Future Elite Basketball Camp
The Howard University
Women's Basketball is excited to announce the 2019
summer camp. We have added the Future Elite
Day Camp from June 24-28, 2019, for girls
in 4-8th grades. It will be a week full of skills, drills and
fun games for the young girls looking to improve their basketball
skills, meet new friends and have fun!
For high school hoopers, we will
host our 3rd-year of the Ty Grace Elite
Experience Camp on August 3, 2019. It is a
one-day event, where players come to learn from our coaches and
other experienced staff to develop their skills, compete against
elite players, and be enlightened on the significance of being a
student-athlete at Howard.
Howard employees can
register at a discounted rate of $170 for the Future Elite
Day Camp.

Tuition-Free STEM Camp
The Verizon Innovation Learning Program
is a three-week summer program for middle school boys.
Participants learn design thinking, 3D printing, augmented reality
and social entrepreneurship.
Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. during the summer and one Saturday a month
throughout the school year. The summer program runs from June
24 to July 12.

HU Early Learning Center Summer
S.T.E.A.M. Program
The Summer S.T.E.A.M. Program
focuses on exploration, investigation and discovery activities
each day. Children will explore within all three classrooms and
will have opportunities to build, collaborate, teach each other
and learn together. This makes our summer experience unique. All
of the children will get an opportunity to plan and work with all
of the teachers and within the different classroom environments
throughout the entire day!
This year's camp runs five weeks
total in three sessions from June 24 to July 26 from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. The program enrolls children
3-6 years of age.
