New Year's Eve at Big Bear

This New Year's Eve you are invited join us for a family-style, three-course, New Year's Goose Dinner with Chef Isaiah Billington (of our beloved Woodberry Kitchen).

The meal will consist of an amuse bouche and starters that include a goose pate, house-made brioche pretzels, local cheese, oilves and pickles. 

The main course will consist of a large roast goose with goose-fat potatoes, apple and sage stuffing, charred red cabbage, maple glazed carrots, and a winter salad.

The final house made sweets will include fudge, brittle, truffles, cookies, shortbread, jelly candies, butterfingers, macaroons, and mint marshmallows.

All guests will be seated at large communal tables. Large groups, small groups, and all individuals are welcome.

It will be a family feast to bring in the new year - with a goose!

$95 per person 

(includes all, the meal, wine & beer, champagne toast, as well as tax & gratuity)

$45 per person 

(does not include beverages, tax or gratuity)

The new Bloomingdale bar, which replaced Costa Brava last month, will be open as usual, serving Nashville hot chicken and offering drinks for $5 during happy hour, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Everyone receives a free glass of champagne at midnight.

fallen leaves not picked up on the 2000 1st Street NW

From a neighbor on the 2000 block of 1st Street NW in Bloomingdale:
 

We need the leaves picked up on our block and I'm sure a few other blocks that have been impacted by the DC Water First Street Tunnel "dig".  Over the past few days, DPW came through the neighborhood to rake and suction up the leaves, but the 2000 block of 1st Street NW was skipped again.  Understanding that the street is blocked, we should still receive the minimum services from the city.  In contrast, parking enforcement shows up every morning even though we have limited parking, and they strictly enforce the rules!  A few of us have tried to clean up to no avail.  I swept most of the block Christmas eve and piled the leaves on the south end of the block (away from the drain).  Please assist!  I have also included a few photos.

Note that World Missions used to have a church at 1720 1st Street NW.  The church relocated to Brookland some time ago.  The plan for the 1720 1st Street NW location is for a daycare facility.

Not counting families and friends who were represented  there were IN ATTENDANCE  300 families/ 843 children physically present at the rally. Also in attendance were vendors/presenters from: The Bureau of Community Hygiene Rodent &Vector Control/Department of Health; DCPC Early Childhood Education Division; the Metropolitan Police Department; CFSA foster Care Agency; and the Family Care Coalition were among our friends who shared information, and  donated a bike for our Anti Crime/Anti Violence Program and the McKinley Technology High School ROTC cadets.

As indicated from information obtained from our demographic registration report we had families represented from each quadrant of the city  which consisted of  families from all social economical levels  such as families classified as being:

·         Homeless families and their children living in shelters, on the street and in cars;

·         Children and families of Ex-offenders;

·         Parents who receive TANF ( on welfare) and social security benefits;

·         Disabled Veterans and their families/children;

·         Teen Moms:

·         Moms registering their children through OSSE and DCPS;

·         Senior Citizens;

·         Grandparents raising children;

·         Siblings of youth incarcerated at the Department of Youth Rehabilitative Services

·         Mentally and Physically Challenged Students from  schools located in each quadrant of the city;

·         Suicidal patients in treatment needing toys for their children;

·         Drug Users  and their children;

·         Latino Families;

·         Persons living with HIV-AIDs;  and

·         families from Domestic Violence Shelters.
