Bloomingdale Neighbors of the First Street Tunnel Project:

We feel it is important to reach out to the Bloomingdale community to let you know that both Tom Lindberg and John Kennedy are leaving DC Water’s Clean Rivers program (DCCR)/First Street Tunnel Project. Tom’s last day will be Friday, July 1; John’s last day will be Thursday, July 7. Both men are returning to their respective home towns, and have enjoyed the opportunity to serve DC Water customers and contribute to new infrastructure in the District.

Going forward, the DC Water primary contact will be Hadiah Jordan, DC Water Clean Rivers Public Outreach. Hadiah will be taking over for Tom. Her contact information follows:

The Tunnel Forum meeting currently scheduled for Thursday, July 28 will continue as scheduled. That meeting will be an opportunity for the First Street Tunnel team to update the community on the remaining schedule of activities for the First Street Tunnel construction contract, and discuss the utility contract work required in advance of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Contract. In addition, representatives from the DC Water Small Diameter Water Main project team will also be present to report on progress and future schedule, not the least of which includes the schedule for final paving in the neighborhood.

We appreciate your participation in the meetings, your suggestions and recommendations, and your continued patience over two years of heavy construction. You have endured a very unique and challenging project that will provide critical flood relief to the Bloomingdale neighborhood for generations to come.

It has been a real pleasure and great honor to work with the dedicated citizens of Bloomingdale. The two-way conversation we created with the neighborhood and your participation improved the project, and we are grateful.

This City council testimony by historic restoration artist Daniel Wolkoff tells us about adaptive re-use and urban agriculture in 20 acres "underground" McMillan cisterns the govt. wants to demolish. How we save the "McMillan underground", and the entire surface park for our children and families. Landscape Architect Mary Pat Rowan exposes the VMP/DC govt. plan to subvert our rights to oppose the "Monstrosity" and petition the govt. with an "astroturf" PR campaign from Baltimore PR firm, Fontaine Company.

Unfortunately DC govt. has dictated to us "the owner", the destruction of the 20 acre "underground" and paving over the site with 50 buildings and 3000 parking spaces. A less corrupt govt. would be offering, the whole city, a great community amenity, as 25 acres of open air green space, genuine historic preservation and adaptive-reuse in creative and imaginative ways. We can save this and have a coherent historic park, like the privileged areas of upper NW enjoy. We have to fight for it, wrestle our own land back from a wasteful destructive collusion between DC officials and a conglomerate of developers, everyone is in on this one!

The DC community needs a huge outdoor concert space(see Hyde Park, or Lansdowne, or Sheep Meadow in NY Central Park. Really, why don't we have a large community campus for arts/education and performance (see Glen Echo), why no DC Central Park like NY? Why should we get a "McPark" in front of condos, when we already have only one fifth the proper park land as Upper NW?

The worshipers of profits are telling us to demolish 20 acres of fascinating underground cisterns and over build our public land, with a crass suburban office and condo park that violates the DC Comprehensive Plan and federal covenants which were assigned to the sale from GSA to DC in 1987. The "walkable neighborhoods" of EYA (www.envisionmcmillan.com), require 31,000 additional auto trips daily, on top of the existing 38,800 autos at present congesting, N. Capitol daily. The developers traffic experts predict will crowd the crass "National Harbor" and massive unnecessary medical office towers in historic Bloomingdale. And the "Monstrosity on Michigan Avenue" will generate 24,000 mass transit users coming from the McMillan Town Center, and will need 600 buses and shuttles a day to use the Brookland-CUA or RI Ave metro rail. Don't let DC govt. corruption build the "Monstrosity on Michigan Avenue". It is our neighborhoods to lose.

This Week at the stands:

WHISKED: Strawberry Lemon and Strawberry Rhubarb, Simply Rhubarb, Apple, Salted Caramel Apple, Sea Salt Chocolate Chess. Quiches for brunch: Asparagus and Goat Cheese, Bacon, Cheddar and Onion, Spinach, Basil and Sundried Tomatoes. Spring Greens and Feta. Lots of cookies which also make lovely dinner gifts.

NUMBER 1 SONS. Pickle brine to add to your gin and tonic? The bartender at Left Door told us about that last night. Pickle brine to marinade some pork? New York style pickles, kimchi, krauts, curtidos, salsa so verde and a dozen other fermented vegetables. Great on rice, great with grilled meats or vegetables. And Garner is growing a lot of those cukes for them.

MOUNTAIN VIEW: Certified Organic Carrots, garlic scapes, sugar snap peas, sweet Charlie strawberries, lots of head lettuce ( butterhead romaine and summer crisp) kales, lots of collards, beets and greens, lavender, mint, oregano, scallions, bok choi, mustards greens, summer squash and nasturtium flowers.

GARNER: Field tomatoes have just started. Zucchini, yellow squash, Bonita, Golden Zucchini, Patty Pan, Cucumbers. Candy Onion bunches, Swiss Chard, beets and greens, lettuce mix, Sugar Snap Peas, Sweet peas, Kales, Green beans, White sweet Japanese turnips and greens, Kohlrabi, Cabbages, Carrots. And I saw skinny little yellow wax beans at their stand at 14&U last week. Just like French haricots verts -- except they are yellow.

CUCINA AL VOLO: Matteo, Daniele (and Rolando) create Florence in DC: fresh pastas and fresh filled pastas, authentic sauces and soups.
The pastas cook in less than 4 minutes and they are gorgeous. Smoked paprika orange fettucine, deep purple beet fusili, ravioli stuffed with homemade burrata.....Pasta and a salad make a light, elegant lunch or dinner. In about 4 minutes. Perfect for a hot day.

PANORAMA: French bakers from Brittany bake us baguettes, croissants, sourdoughs, whole wheat, whole grains, breakfast pastries and a huge tent of baked goodies.

TRUCK PATCH: Famous for their pastured pork (get that bacon) and earliglow strawberries and greens. Spinach, chard, mesclun, arugula. Beets. Asparagus.

REID: Strawberries — they were wonderful last week. Sugar Snap Peas.

KESWICK CREAMERY: If you have not tried their brand new Cider Hill Cheese, run to the stand. It is the best new cheese I have tasted in a long time. Serve it at room temperature. They crafted it to go with artisanal ciders. Yogurt for the strawberries, Wallaby and Vermeer or spicy Dragons Breath for the grilled foods or kimcheese sandwiches. Feta to go with Garner’s first field tomatoes and cucumbers and mint. Quark for spreading on Pano toast — what cream cheese wishes it could be.

(Washington, DC) - Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department announced that several arrests have been made in recent cases in Washington, DC.

First District:

* On Wednesday, June 22, 2016, 22-year-old Jonathan Hernandez of Northeast, DC was arrested for a Robbery While Armed offense that occurred in the 1100 block of North Capitol Street, Northwest. CCN: 16-083-644
o On Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at approximately 11:15 am, the suspect approached the victim while she was sitting in her vehicle at the listed location. The suspect then brandished a gun, and demanded the victim to hand over her personal items. The victim complied and the suspect fled the scene.

* On Wednesday, June 22, 2016, 22-year-old Anthony Whitaker of Northeast, DC was arrested for a Robbery While Armed offense that occurred in the 1400 block of Duncan Street, Northeast. CCN: 16-100-124
o On Sunday, June 19, 2016 at approximately 3:03 am, two suspects approached three victims at the listed location. The suspects both brandished a gun, and demanded the victims to get on the ground. After taking personal items from the victim's pockets, one of the suspects assaulted a victim. Both suspects then got in a vehicle and fled the scene.

Fifth District:

* On Friday, June 17, 2016, a 15-year-old female of Northeast, DC was arrested for a Robbery (Force and Violence) offense that occurred in the 1700 block of Gales Street, Northeast. CCN: 16-099-227
* On Friday, June 17, 2016 at approximately 8:30 pm, several suspects approached the victim and began assaulting her. One of the suspects snatched the victim's phone from her hand, and the suspects fled the scene. This case remains under investigation.

* On Sunday, June 19, 2016, 21-year-old Dominique Thurston of Southeast, DC was arrested for a Robbery (Force & Violence) offense that occurred in the 1500 block of Maryland Avenue, Northeast. CCN: 16-100- 318
* On Sunday, June 19, 2016 at approximately 1:30 pm, a suspect approached the victim asking for a ride home. Upon entering the car, the suspect then placed the victim in a chokehold and stole a backpack, a cellphone, food, and US currency before fleeing the scene.

* On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, 20-year-old Nathaniel White and 30-year old Sheldon White Jr. both of Southeast, DC were arrested for an Assault with Intent to Rob offense that occurred in the 2300 block of New York Avenue, Northeast. CCN: 16-101- 294
* On Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at approximately 2:00 am, three suspects approached the victim and attempted to take his scooter. The victim was able to fight off the attackers, who immediately fled the area. No property was obtained by the suspects. This case remains under investigation.

* On Wednesday, June 22, 2016, 33-year-old Danielle Gardner of Northeast, DC was arrested for a Robbery (Snatch) offense that occurred in the 1400 block of Maryland Avenue, Northeast. CCN: 16-101-978
* On Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at approximately 4:50 pm, a suspect approached the victim asking for money. When the victim pulled out his wallet, the suspect snatched the wallet and fled the scene.

* On Wednesday, June 22, 2016, 19-year-old Omar Williams and a 17-year-old juvenile male both of Northeast, DC were arrested for a Robbery (Snatch) offense that occurred in the 1300 block of North Capitol Street, Northeast. CCN: 16-102- 346
* On Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at approximately 4:10 pm, two suspects approached the victim inside a business. The suspects then took the victims headphones and fled the location.

* On Friday, June 24, 2016, a 16-year-old juvenile male of Northeast, DC was arrested for an Armed Robbery offense that occurred in the 100 block of S Street, Northwest. CCN: 16-103- 403
* On Friday, June 24, 2016 at approximately 2:10 am, four male suspects approached the victims as they walked through the block. One of the suspects then produced a handgun as the suspects stole the victim's phones and wallets. This case remains under investigation.

* On Sunday, June 19, 2016, 47-year-old Herschel Carpenter of Brandywine, Maryland was arrested for a Carjacking offense that occurred in the 3000 block of 18th Street, Northeast. CCN: 16-100-343
* On Sunday, June 19, 2016 at approximately 12:30 pm, the victim was driving her car when the suspect, riding as a passenger, began assaulting her. He then proceeded to take the vehicle and flee the scene.

* On Sunday, June 19, 2016, 21-year-old Dominique Thurston of Southeast, DC was arrested for a Robbery (Force & Violence) offense that occurred in the 1500 block of Maryland Avenue, Northeast. CCN: 16-100- 318
* On Sunday, June 19, 2016 at approximately 1:30 pm, a suspect approached the victim asking for a ride home. Upon entering the car, the suspect then placed the victim in a chokehold and stole a backpack, a cellphone, food, and US currency before fleeing the scene.

Sixth District:

* On Friday, June 17, 2016, 19-year-old Lorraine Chambliss of Southeast, DC was arrested for an Armed Robbery offense that occurred within the 3500 block of Jay Street, Northeast. CCN: 16-057-988
o On Thursday, April 14, 2016 at approximately 9:50 pm, the suspect assisted in luring the victim into the offense location. Once at the location, two accomplices robbed the victim and stole US currency and his vehicle.

* On Saturday, June 18, 2016, two juvenile females from Southeast, DC were arrested for a Robbery (Force & Violence) offense that occurred within the 2500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast. CCN: 16-090-690
o On Saturday, June 4, 2016 at approximately 9:30 pm, the victims were approached by the suspects, who then assaulted the victims and stole a bag containing clothing and an iPhone.

* On Monday, June 20, 2016, 27-year-old Moses Smith of Capitol Heights, Maryland was arrested for an Armed Robbery (Gun) offense that occurred in the 5000 block of Hanna Place, Southeast. CCN: 16-011-487
o On Friday, January 22, 2016 at approximately 1:00 pm, the suspect, along with two unknown accomplices, approached the victim and proceeded to hold him at gunpoint while stealing his cell phone.

* On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, 27-year-old Leroy Taylor of Northeast, DC was arrested for a Robbery (Force & Violence) offense that occurred in the 200 block of 37th Place, Southeast. CCN: 16-094-322
o On June 10, 2016 at approximately 11:30 am, the suspect along with two unknown accomplices approached the victim and assaulted him. They proceeded to steal the victim's shoes and flee the scene.
