DC's Mayor is conspiring to line the pockets of corporate developers who enable the racist land use strategies pushing low-income residents out of the city. McMillan Park represents an important part of our struggle for environmental heath and economic justice.
On Piscataway land, McMillan Park and Sand Filtration Plant was built at the turn of the 19th century to cure the city of water borne illnesses. It became an historic gathering place for residents to rest and recreate together. One of the first de-facto integrated spaces in DC, kite flying contests and community-driven baseball fields were just some of the ways community members created joy in the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods. Adding to the historic value of this site are the still-functional sand filtration towers and 20-acre water cistern below that could produce locally sourced, chemical-free, clean water.
The Mayor's current plans would bring an additional 20,000 vehicular trips through a region of the city already disproportionately impacted by high asthma rates, especially on our vulnerabel children. As the climate changes and brings worsening air quality to cities across the world, Bowser would move us backwards by refusing to listen to community needs for health and wellness. savemcmillan.org/water

whoo! 7th Annual DC Wassail in Bloomingdale, Eckington & Truxton Circle -- Saturday, 12-14-2019
After seven years in Columbia Heights and Park View, this year's DC Wassail will be in the Bloomingdale, Eckington, and Truxton Circle area! A wassail is an English holiday tradition where singers go from door to door, offering songs and good cheer in exchange for treats. We run ours a bit differently; we pre-select a few houses to go to, prepare hot drinks at those places, and show up to each with a crowd of 60-70 revelers.
This year's wassail will be on Saturday, December 14, from about 2-5pm. We will have a short practice session at 1:30pm at the Kennedy Recreation Center, 1400 7th St NW, before heading to the neighborhood. Songbooks will be provided; all you need is yourself and a travel mug!
Our rough schedule of stops is: 2:15pm alley between Bates and Q NW, 100 block, 2:45pm unit block of R St NW, 3:15pm 1st St. between U and V NW, 3:45pm unit block of V St NW, 4:15pm 100 block of U NW, and at 4:45pm we will sing to the apple trees at Anxo Cidery & Pintxos Bar, 300 Florida Ave. NW. Our Facebook event for this year's wassail is here, and you can read a bit about us in this article in last year's Post.
