Dear Commissioner Lewis,

This letter is to inform you of DC Water’s intent to apply for an After Hours Work Permit at the Florida Avenue work site located at 321 Florida Ave NW. In accordance with District of Columbia Municipal Regulations (DCMR) 12A, Section 105.1.3, the design-builder intends to apply for an extended-hours permit for two shifts daily, from 7AM to 3AM to perform bypass pumping. Pumps and generators will need to be functional 24 hours per day and are anticipated to last 2 weeks.

The purpose of this activity is to enable construction of the near surface facilities at the Florida Ave work site. All possible reduction measures will be taken to mitigate noise that can be caused by the generators and pumps associated with bypass pumping. Neighborhood noise levels will be monitored and should be similar to current noise levels. Per DCMR, noise levels will be kept to a rolling average of 85 dB.

DC Water is constructing the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) to connect with the existing sewer system, significantly mitigating sewer flooding while improving the water quality of the Anacostia River. The NEBT is the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project and starts just south of RFK Stadium and extend north to Rhode Island Avenue and west to R Street NW. I am emailing you with exciting news! I am teaming up with the Ward 5 Education Equity Committee, the McKinley Tech PTO, and my predecessor, Mark Jones, to host the Ward 5 Back-to-School Supplies Giveaway!

The purpose of the event is to provide Ward 5 students school supplies to meaningfully engage in distance or in-person learning this school year. All DCPS and charter school students are eligible to pick up supplies on Friday, September 11th from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. via the McKinley Tech parking lot. Neighbors are encouraged to enter McKinley's parking lot via T Street NE and exit via the alleyway to maintain traffic flow. We will have signs to support the flow of traffic. Students picking up supplies in cars will stay in their vehicles for safety purposes; students walking up will retrieve supplies from one of several socially-distant stations. We will have PPE on hand.

Over the next couple of weeks, we are working to fundraise and get the word out about the event. If you or someone you know (or even the Civic Association) is interested in donating, you can contribute here. All donations are tax-deductible (thanks to the McKinley PTO!). Also, if you can share the flyer below via your networks and listservs and encourage your neighbors to pick up supplies on September 11th, that would be great. We want neighbors from all corners of the Ward to benefit from this opportunity.

We are also looking for volunteers. If interested, please let me know. DCPS high school students who volunteer will receive community service hours.

Music is back during the Farmers’ Market

We’re bringing music back to the Farmer’s Market this Sunday with a couple of local DJs playing from the 2nd floor.

Niko “Tough Love” will start playing around noon with a special guest (Laura Catania) to give us a little theme music for our Sunday. We’ll have frozen daiquiris on the patio (peach season!) with kid friendly - and booze friendly - summer drinks from 10 to 3pm.

We value everyone’s health, so please remember (and wear) your masks.

Change in our Liturgy

Today, you’ll notice a few differences in our order of worship. Most importantly, our service will include an opportunity to receive Holy Communion. If you previously picked up consecrated bread and wine from the church, you may consume it when invited to do so. We’ll follow the form found on page 396 of the Book of Common Prayer (“Communion under Special Circumstances”), which also includes Confession and a Post-Communion Prayer.

If there is more than one person in your household, I encourage you to serve Communion to one another.

If you did not have an opportunity to pick up consecrated bread and wine, you may wish to pray the prayer below while others are receiving. It’s a prayer for Spiritual Communion that originated in Apartheid South Africa, in another time when the sacraments of the Church were not always readily available.

Jesus, may all that is you flow into me.

May your body and blood be my food and drink.

May your passion and death be my strength and life.

Jesus, with you by my side enough has been given.

May the shelter I seek be the shadow of your cross.

Let me not run from the love which you offer
