>>>The First Lady’s First Family
Michelle Obama's Ancestral Pathways to the White House<<<
               
The community is invited to learn the fascinating story behind Michelle Obama's “first family” during an engaging evening with accomplished alumna Rachel L. Swarns. She is a Washington correspondent for The New York Times and author of American Tapestry: The Story of the Black, White, and Multiracial Ancestors of Michelle Obama.The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in the East Ballroom of the Blackburn Center. This event is free and open to the public. 
     
Following Swarns’ interactive, multimedia presentation with photos of Michelle Obama, the author will be joined by some of Howard’s experts for a discussion on race, cultural identity, family and an American narrative. 
            
>>>Mandatory Membership Intake Process Informational Session<<<
The Office of Student Life & Activities will facilitate its "Mandatory Membership Intake Process Informational Session" at 6:30 p.m. today in Cramton Auditorium. This is a mandatory session for any/all students who are interested in joining an organization with a selective membership process. Doors close at 6:45 p.m. and students must bring their Howard University Student ID to the meeting.

>>>Music Department Flute Fete<<<
 
The community is invited to the attend the 13th annual "Flute Fete:  A Celebration of the Flute" from 12:40 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in the L.V. Childers Hall Auditorium, room 30001.  This presentation will be "The Flute Music of India" with guest artist Deepak Ram, featuring the Flutes of Howard University.  This event is free. For more information, call 202-806-7082 or visit www.coas.howard.edu/music.
                                                              
>>>Inauguration Panel on Obama Presidency<<<

Mayor of Atlanta and University Trustee, Kasim Reed, will participate in the “Looking Back, Looking Ahead: The Legacy of President Obama” panel discussion at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, in the Blackburn Center Ballroom. The panel is part of a series of University events marking the 2013 Inauguration of President Barack Obama. Other participants include: Michael Grant, president of the National Bankers Association; Greg Carr, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of Africana Studies at the University; and Stefanie Brown James, a member of the 2013 Presidential Inauguration Committee. The panelists will discuss the African-American political agenda, finance and banking industry reform, immigration, health care reforms and other topics. Wilmer Leon, political scientist and nationally syndicated radio and TV talk show host, will moderate.  For more information, call 202-238-2330.
 >>>A Look Behind the Scenes of Obama’s First Term in Photographs<<<
Moorland-Spingarn Research Center will host “Barack Obama: The First Term.” The photography exhibition documents President Barack Obama’s first term as President of the United States.   
The exhibit of 60 photographs will open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19 and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20.  The exhibit will be closed Monday, Jan. 21, but will reopen to the public Tuesday, Jan. 22 and will run through Friday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. There is no charge for admission to the exhibit. For more information, call 202-806-7239.

>>>Enterprise Technology Services Student Calendar<<<

Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) has launched a Student Calendar to aid students in keeping up with important University events. The calendar is available on the Howard Mobile app for Android and iOS, and the Current Students page on howard.edu. The calendar will encompass all scheduled events on the University’s Academic Calendar, such as important financial deadlines, Residence Life move in dates and holiday closures as well as other student-focused events. The calendar features detailed information on each event as well as the ability to export and filter items.

***Remember, turning off lights, computers and other appliances saves money. Very often, lights and computers are left on in offices and classrooms that are not in use. To conserve energy and to practice environmental stewardship, please turn off all lights, computers and other electrical appliances when you leave offices, classrooms and other university buildings.
