Rev. Melvin Brooks of Brooks Upholstery, 80 RI Ave NW: passed on 12-31-2013

Brooks Upholstery was located in the small space behind City Cleaners at 80 Rhode Island Avenue NW for 50 years.  Its owner, Rev. Melvin Brooks, closed his business a few years ago, and the City Cleaners folks took over the space.

Here is a current pic of the exterior:

Now read this message from a neighbor down the street:

I just learned the Melvin Brooks, the owner of Brooks Upholstery which used to be in the Unit block of Rhode Island Ave NW died this month. He and his wife were simply wonderful people. They would always invite my dog and I into their shop and give her treats. If he didn't have any treats for her, he would dig into his own lunch and find something to share. I was sorry to see them close up shop and have really missed them. They were a special part of the neighborhood.

  1. This is sad. He was a wonderful man. I only knew him from doing a couple of chairs for me but his warmth and openness were clear.
