The reason for my message this afternoon is to let you know, as a local neighborhood leader, about an upcoming change to the footprint of the Adams & Flagler Construction Staging Area (CSA).  We will be closing Adams Street effective Monday for the duration of our project and I am wondering if you might help us in our outreach to the neighbors in your catchment area to meet us on site after work tomorrow to discuss it.

Thomas Lindberg and I are working to get the word out and he notified the Tunnel Forum representatives as follows:

After consultation with DDOT ( traffic control  & Ward 5 Arborists), DC Fire Department and others it has become critical for safety reasons to expand the Adams Street and Flagler Place. The scope of work, including the replacement of 135 feet of 30 inch water main, the installation of new water valves and the requirement of the DC Fire Department to have a 14 foot clearway though the site at all times require more of the public space than anticipated during design.

No trees or tree boxes will be removed as a result of this change, however we will extend the footprint of the CSA to the north side of Adams Street at the curb. Adams Street will remain open to local traffic only from both First and Second Streets NW.  For residents concerned about parking, Adams Street residents with a vehicle registered in the District are eligible for an APA tag.  Many residents on Adams already have a tag and are parking at the Bryant Street CSA. As you know, the Bryant Street parking lot is open 24/7 and is in close proximity to all of from Adams Street. Applications are available at the 2036 First Street site office in the vestibule.

We are contacting a few local folks to meet tomorrow on site. We will prepare an informational flyer on the issue and get it out to ASAP.  We will also cover the issue in more detail at the next Tunnel Forum meeting on Thursday, August 28th.

We hope this information is helpful.

Sincere Regards,

Tom

For those who haven't seen it, I'm forwarding the letter that DC Water wrote to CM McDuffie in early July.  At that time, as you can see, DC Water said there weren't any changes to the Flagler/Adams CSA.

Several of us asked McDuffie to follow up on details, but his office did not respond.

  1. A month ago DC Water told McDuffie there were no changes to the staging area, but it turns out DC Water was wrong. What else is DC Water wrong about? This isn't the first major change to the project. I'm really concerned about the lack of planning, and the rushed process. DC Water should have used its own property a half-block away.
